Gift Shops
Founded in 1859 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner, it started life offering ‘continental produce and imported wines’ – still a passion. Since the 1960s it’s been best known as a specialist in high quality gifts, including our own Ola Gorie jewellery. In 1997 we added designer clothes and accessories to the mix, reflecting owner Ingrid Tait’s background as a textile designer with her own Tait & Style label. “Started on the basis that good service is the first base of efficient service, this house has continued that excellent policy down to the present day. Courteous and efficient service backed by sound experience, indeed make it a pleasure to shop here.” The Traveller, c1920. View a 360° tour

Details & Reviews (1)Kirkness & Gorie
Delicatessen
Kirkness & Gorie prospered throughout the 20th century. Right from the start, the goal was to supply a mixture of everyday essential foods and exotic specialities. Receipt books from a century and more ago show us selling fine French and German wine, pasta, and coffee, as well as bread, potatoes and jam. Whatever was sold had to be of the highest quality. From 1978 to 2007, Kirkness & Gorie held a royal warrant for supplying Orkney honey to the Queen. (Do we still sell Orkney honey? Yes, but it always sells out very quickly: supply is lower and demand higher than when we used to drive off to one of the palaces with a case of honey in the boot.) View a 360° tour

Details & Reviews (0)Celina Rupp Jewellery
Jewellery
About Celina Celina has lived in Orkney for the majority of her life and now lives in the Parish of Holm with her family. Celina has gained much of her experience from working within the jewellery trade, learning the fine skills required for her hand crafted pieces. It is the breathtaking landscape of the Orkney Islands, which gives her the inspiration for her unique collections. Her inspiration comes mainly from the beautiful and stunning scenery which surrounds her. Amongst other things, Celina is heavily inspired by the dramatic seas around Orkney, for which the island is renowned. Sailing boats and in particular the traditional Orkney Yole also play a large part in Celina’s designs. The beautiful Italian Chapel, built during the second world war by the Italian prisoners, has been a fascination for Celina and has now been incorporated into one of her key pieces. Celina’s collection aims to inspire you, as much as she is inspired by Orkney and its Celtic backdrop. View a 360° tour

Our Story I bought my first 3 breeding Zwartbles from Danny McArthy who is the stockman at Longoe farm , at Castle of Mey, Caithness- (The Queen Mother’s Highland Farm) (Pentland Flock ) so, to keep the theme I called mine ‘the Copinsay flock. They are a striking looking sheep, black with a white blaze, originating from Holland, they are really easy to manage and are excellent mothers. Jean Tulloch asked me what like their wool would be to spin, so she sent the first fleeces to the North Ronaldsay mini-mill. ‘What are we going to do with the wool’ Jean asked….I think we’ll knit socks Jean. Me mother usually gave us all socks at Christmas which came from ‘baxters bonny socks’ but they had stopped making them, so I thought we could make wur own ! Jean had this sock knitting machine which her mother had used in North Ronaldsay, so of course I had to have one o them as weel. I was lucky enough to acquire one from England which is over 100 years old and very ornate, but it works perfectly Orkney tweed Loom It soon became obvious that I was never going to manage to knit socks to use up all the wool the sheep was going to produce so I thought I would see if I could get some rugs made. I contacted Jamiesons Spinning Mill in Shetland to see if it could be done and they said yes, but I would have to send up at least 200 kilos of raw wool before they could process it. So I managed to source some more black wool from other farmers and I added some white wool as well and shipped 650 kilos to Shetland. So Orkney Tweed was born. View a 360° tour
