All types of accommodation to suit every budget can be found via www.orkney.com.
Bear in mind that if you are travelling with a family you may need to be with a vehicle in order to get to beaches, etc., as Stagecoach public transport is limited in certain areas.
Rental vehicles from the airport are via W R Tullock who are agents for Avis, Hertz, etc. There are other vehicle rental options, mostly in Kirkwall.
If you are arriving by ferry, bear in mind that there are various ports of entry to Orkney, so you may wish to choose that which is nearer your accommodation.
Foot passengers may wish to hire a Driver Guide as, otherwise, getting to all the important sites may prove difficult.
I act as both a Step-On Guide [in your vehiclle, assuming there is room for an extra passenger!] or as a Driver Guide for up to 4 passengers, operating as Personalised Orkney Tours:

Visiting Orkney
We are looking into visiting the Orkney Islands this year and as we have never been before we are doing a little research. We are a family of 5 two aduts and three children aged 6,8 and 14. We are looking for a hotel thats suitable for our family. Can you tell us a little bit about what to do to keep everyone happy? We are pretty sporting and normally spend a lot of time on the beach playing sports and swimming. This is going to be a different type of holiday, but one we are looking forward to.
Any tips or advice for us?

We have never been as far north as this before and we are now deciding on where to go on our holidays for 2021. We have had a good look through the information on here for the Orkney islands and on the guide for lerwick. They look very intersting places. Our main concerns are the distances to travel. We live in North Wales. We were planning to drive and use a car ferry to get to the islands. Is there a company that can arrange travel costs and times for the ferrys that would enable us to get to the Orkney Islands first where we plan to stay for a week then head off to Lerwick for anothger week before heading home. We plan to be aaway for around three weeks in total, and it would be in July this year.
Thanks Andrea

Hi Andy and Lily
Our man in the field Richard Marcinko is visiting the islands on Sunday 15th April. He will be there for a full week and will be visiting as many businesses and services as possible in that time. He is really looking forward to meeting the people on these lovely islands and compiling a great visitor guide for both yachtsmen and general visitors.

Orkney is on our list for places to go next year. When would you suggest is the best time of year to visit? We would be driving up from Sunderland.

Great to hear that you enjoyed it. The feedback we get back regarding Personalised Orkney Tours is always positive. Very knowledgable and makes it very interesting.
ORKNEY TOUR GUIDES
Jo Jones, at Personalised Orkney Tours, did us proud on Orkney at the end of last month. She was marvellous. Reviews on her do as much justice as mere words can. I can’t do better. And it is the experience itself which really counts. She is hugely knowledgeable, nothing is too much trouble, she is great company, and full of anecdotes - both official and unofficial - which bring Orkney and its history to life. We were told, before coming for a few days, albeit at the end of the season, that we must get a guide. So true. And especially in the hands of Jo, who shaped our itinerary for us, modified it as needed (weather and preference!), and ensured that we left Orkney alive to and revived by the story of this remarkable land and its inhabitants over the history of humankind. We were four - my wife and I and my cousin and his partner from Kenya - in a couple of campervans. Thank you so much, Jo! My wife and I in UK, we are coming back next summer (rented accomodation this time) for a still closer look. We cannot but ask her to take us to the next level!

Michael Sinclair Woodturner Orkney
If you are looking for something unique to take home from Orkney, a trip to Michael Sinclairs is a good choice. All his pieces are individually made by him. Its obvious he has years of experience and enjoys his work. It has a showroom and a workshop. Its also set in beautiful surroundings. Well worth a visit.
Skipper’s Bar Orkney
This is the barto come to if you want to watch sports, or play poole. It also dishes up some pretty tasty food as well. Its frequented by locals and visitors and is lively. one of the most popular bars on Orkney.
Helgis Bar Orkney
This Viking style bar/ restaurant is located on the front overlooking the harbour. Serves good food and has a varied selection of beers and whiskeys. It also has upstairs seating where the view is of the harbour. It is only small, so if you are going in to wat i would suggest contactin in advance.
The Neuk Orkney
The Neuk is part of the Albert Hotel and is well run. Good choice of food and obviously drinks. Good choice for families and is children friendly.
Indian Garden
A really nice Indian restaurant witha seperate takeaway next door. If you are craving for some indian food on your visit to Orkney you will get your fix here.
Helgis Bar Orkney
Well located lively bar with friendly staff. Has a Viking feel to it. Good ales etc. Pretty much everything you wouldexpect from a well run Orkney bar.
Indian Garden Indian restaurant
Top notch Indian restaurant with a seperate takeaway section. We ate in and the service was perfect as was the food. If Indian cuisine is your thing you are going to love it here.
Our crew member Steve Mallinson visited Michael's gallery and was very impressed. Fantastic woodworking skills and the finished articles are incredible

Holidaying UK this year and Orkney islands seems to be our choice. never visited before and we are looking forward to it. We have been looking through some of the different hotels, bars restaurants, the normal. we like the look of the the Neuk so hope to see you. One of our group is a vegan, do you cater for this?
Jollys of Orkney
Hi Andrea, most of the businesses dont reply to the comments as they are mainly used for reviews. For information like this, you would be better to contact them direct by phone or email.
The Harbourguides Crew member who visited Orkney last time used Jollys a lot and spoke very highly of the food etc.
Good luck and remember to tell them where you saw them.
Jollys of Orkney.
Just browsing through the information on the Orkney Isles, and "Jollys of Orkney" keeps popping up. We plan to visit sometime in July this year and then head off north to Lerwick. we will be driving and plan to stay in self catering accommodation. Do you have a menu for hampers. We plan to spend quite a lot of time traveeling and it would be helpful for us to take out good food for the day.
We are planning our trip (Again) to Orkney and Lerwick. Last summers trip was cancelled, but nothing is going to stop us getting away this year. We are so looking forward to our holiday this summer and hope to see you in June
The Brothy Bar Orkney. Couldnt make it to the islands last summer for obvious reasons, but going to make up for it this year. We are looking forward to blowing the froth off a few in the Brothy Bar
Merry Christmas from Fiona and family. We enjoyed the hospitality so much on our last trip here. We are planning to sail Orkney again this summer, so we look forward to more relaxing afternoon/ evenings in your lovely bar .
Well its Christmas day and we are sat at home planning our summer hols around Orkney. We enjoyed our visit earlier this year so much that we cant wait to come back. The harbour View restaurant an hotel are where we had so much fun and relaxation and its great to look at the different places we visited and ate at. It brings back great memories. We will be back early July and hope to be making many more happy memories.
Merry Christmas
Fiona and family xx
Of course we visit hers on visit. We no stay in the hotel but we eat and drink a lot here. We liked a much and meet different people. Very friendly and offer help and good education on the area.
We think we in Americas for one minute HAHAH! we joke, but we like the change of food and experience here. We like burgers and we ate burgers here. weboth think perfect and we want more next we come to these islands
This is one more reason for our visit happy and comfortable when we visit. We liked so much the food to take with us on our next location. thank you and we tell other people who come to here for a visit to you. We love very much your island
Great bar and hotel. everybody knows about yhis place. visit it early on your visit, because if not you will have missed out on a few great days and nights
A good lively bar situated in the excellent Kirkwall Hotel. Everything you would expect from a bar attached to a good hotel. Food, service, drinks all good.
Nice atmospheric bar restaurant close to the marina. A viking inspired theme to this small but very well stocked bar.
Really worth a visit or two, (Or three or four, as was our case)
Well, after reading all great the reviews on here we decided to come and see what all the fuss was about. And we wasn't disappointed. We brought so much back to the boat from here and as a previous person commented, it is the ideal place to stock the boat up with something a little bit different from the usual.
When in Kirkwall, a must place to frequent is the Bothy Bar. Great place for catching up over a drink or two. varied range of ales and spirits, many of them locally brewed or distilled. Plenty of locals frequent here as well as visitors, us included.
Lovely bar, restaurant in the Well known and superb Kirkwall Hotel. Good place to meet locals and get to know more about the area. Local knowledge and recommendations are always the best and we got lots if advice in here from locals and frequent visitors to Orkney. Can be nice and cosy, but with enough going on to keep you occupied. We really enjoyed our visits here.
We came in here to watch some sports that Nige wanted to see. I wasnt looking forward to it, and nor was my two daughters. How wrong could we have been. Its a relatively busy place but really comfortable at the same time. Plenty to do here and we did come back a few times and will come back a few more no doubt on our next visit.
An ideally located bar restaurant near to the marina stocking lots of different ales. The food served is well above pub food standard and the menu pretty much has something to suit anybody. When in Orkney you will no doubt stumble across Helgis, make sure you dont just pass by, its well worth popping in.
This is one establishment that we couldn't do without on our trip to Orkney. It is THE place to go fro provisions, Love the tag "Yacht Hampers" it is what it says, get a hamper and take it back to the boat. Just full of great local produce.
Great traditional British bar situated in the Albert Hotel. If you like to see the local history of an area, the Bothy Bar is steeped in it and has information on it all around the place. One of our regular haunts on our visit to Orkney and will continue to be so.
A great place to be if you like a really decent burger. Well our kids definitely love a good burger and they really loved it here. When we asked the question "Where do you want to eat tonight?" It was always Busters!! Normally a busy place, but the service was prompt and well worth the short wait.
we will come here again next year.
A really lively bar that shows all the sports channels. They also serve great food. Locals and visitors seem to visit here. It really is the ideal place to come and watch live sporting events in a friendly lively atmosphere, with good food and drinks at hand.
We found this when we searched for "Yacht Hampers" . what a great idea. we took quite a lot back to the boat and Sarah loved the fact that for once she didnt have to preparefood for us all. It was all done for her. Its definitely changed our outlook on preparing the boat for a passage. Get the Brig larder to prepare it all for you and enjoy the rest of the holiday.
Its really fresh local produce and delicious.
Great place for food and drink, and it has a substantial gluten free menu. We had Haggis fondue, a chicken salad, soup, and smoked salmon. everything was perfect. we would recommend people to eat here at least once when visiting. We think you will go again soon.
Enjoy x
Nipped in to the bar for a quick drink or two and ended up eating here. we only ate from the bar menu, but it was delicious. well priced and a very friendly atmosphere. Its one we will come back to.
Great find. Only problem was trying to get the kids out. Apart from the big leisure centre on the island , things to occupy the little ones can be a little stresful so going for a coffee at the garden centre and finding Play@wellpark is a must for all kids of all ages .Myself and rob chilled in the cafe section whilst we let the little ones blow off steam. Shall be back again hopefully sooner rather than later.
It’s so nice to see a family run business make something from nothing but a dream. Great story and labour of love and to hear the story of starting this from nothing to an absolutely beautiful wildlife centre.
We spoke extensively with Gill and her daughter Lisa about their passion for animals and the care of them.
The meerkats feeding times and talk was excellent by Lisa .
I also recommend Gills home made cakes. Delicious.
Only down side is that we missed the arrival of their monkey lemurs. Don’t worry Lisa , we will be back next year. Keep up the good, hard work. Xx
American themed diner
Literally bobbed in for a burger and chips and wasn’t disappointed. Was quite busy and waiting time was quick before being served. Always have a soft spot for places like this as I lived in USA for a year. Plenty on the plate a no complaints from me.
Tucked away from the high street behind The Flagship opposite the church but a great find. Being honest we only found it due to nipping into the dentist next door for an emergency appointment.
Excellent place if you like your cheeses and wine. Great selection. Highly Recommend .
I can honestly say I’ve fallen in love with the Orkneys and Skaill House is one of them reasons. Steeped in history , I found it fascinating. Loved how they kept it how once they lived . Set in astounding grounds with jaw dropping back drops of the island and coast.
I loved the library, genuine Captain Cooks crockery, WOW factor on the bedrooms and Chanel wardrobe, and was intrigued by the Tiger rug from years gone by.
The staff are very knowledgeable, and Cormac the manager was awesome in giving me a personal tour of this excellent establishment.
An absolute gem of a guest house . I normally stay in hotels however their were no rooms in the inn where I normally stay so decided to stay here for a night .spotless modern en-suite rooms with beautiful views overlooking kirkwell bay
The owners Elaine & Keith made me feel very welcome and after leaving my laptop on the ferry they bent over backwards to retrieve it for me. Thankfully it had been handed in. Honest Orkney folk . Great start to my week here.
I don’t do breakfast however the two families in front of me were raving about how good it was.
It’s 4* but I give it a 5* and have already booked in for next years trip
We only nipped in here on our last day on the Orkneys, but we wished we had have visited earlier. We will certainly be visiting again earlier on our next visit to these isles. top class!
We came in here quite a lot as its very close to the marina. Howver if it had been miles from the marina, we would have still visited this place often. Nice atmosphere and staff. see you later this year
My family often use this hotel rather than staying on the boat, rooms are lovely not far from the marina and they really rate the food too. Five stars!
Always used this shop when visiting westray, now they now have a larger version in kirkwall which I use more now we've just recently bought a house there :) staff are so helpful too. Five stars!!
If your looking at photo opportunities and great food, would definately recommend the birsay Bay Tea room, staff are so great as well, will be back next year!
Skippers Bar is a traditional pub on the harbour front, in the centre of Kirkwall, serving quality food, drinks, music & entertainment.
The welcoming atmosphere makes it the perfect place to meet friends, relax and enjoy the informal surroundings, whilst sampling the extensive range of food, drinks, wine & cocktails.

Kirkness & Gorie prospered throughout the 20th century. Right from the start, the goal was to supply a mixture of everyday essential foods and exotic specialities. Receipt books from a century and more ago show us selling fine French and German wine, pasta, and coffee, as well as bread, potatoes and jam. Whatever was sold had to be of the highest quality.
From 1978 to 2007, Kirkness & Gorie held a royal warrant for supplying Orkney honey to the Queen. (Do we still sell Orkney honey? Yes, but it always sells out very quickly: supply is lower and demand higher than when we used to drive off to one of the palaces with a case of honey in the boot.)

About Celina
Celina has lived in Orkney for the majority of her life and now lives in the Parish of Holm with her family. Celina has gained much of her experience from working within the jewellery trade, learning the fine skills required for her hand crafted pieces. It is the breathtaking landscape of the Orkney Islands, which gives her the inspiration for her unique collections.
Her inspiration comes mainly from the beautiful and stunning scenery which surrounds her. Amongst other things, Celina is heavily inspired by the dramatic seas around Orkney, for which the island is renowned. Sailing boats and in particular the traditional Orkney Yole also play a large part in Celina’s designs. The beautiful Italian Chapel, built during the second world war by the Italian prisoners, has been a fascination for Celina and has now been incorporated into one of her key pieces.
Celina’s collection aims to inspire you, as much as she is inspired by Orkney and its Celtic backdrop.

Stromness is a picturesque and bustling small town, shaped by the sea. Yards from the historic harbour, the winding streets lead to a range of eateries, local craft shops and galleries.
The Orkney Folk Festival, held in Stromness every May, is a highlight in both the Orkney and Scottish Folk calendars. Performers and visitors from all over the world come to soak up the music, and, of course, the magical atmosphere.
Founded in 1859 by the great-great-grandfather of the current owner, it started life offering ‘continental produce and imported wines’ – still a passion. Since the 1960s it’s been best known as a specialist in high quality gifts, including our own Ola Gorie jewellery. In 1997 we added designer clothes and accessories to the mix, reflecting owner Ingrid Tait’s background as a textile designer with her own Tait & Style label.

Our Story
I bought my first 3 breeding Zwartbles from Danny McArthy who is the stockman at Longoe farm , at Castle of Mey, Caithness- (The Queen Mother’s Highland Farm) (Pentland Flock ) so, to keep the theme I called mine ‘the Copinsay flock. They are a striking looking sheep, black with a white blaze, originating from Holland, they are really easy to manage and are excellent mothers.
Jean Tulloch asked me what like their wool would be to spin, so she sent the first fleeces to the North Ronaldsay mini-mill. ‘What are we going to do with the wool’ Jean asked….I think we’ll knit socks Jean. Me mother usually gave us all socks at Christmas which came from ‘baxters bonny socks’ but they had stopped making them, so I thought we could make wur own ! Jean had this sock knitting machine which her mother had used in North Ronaldsay, so of course I had to have one o them as weel. I was lucky enough to acquire one from England which is over 100 years old and very ornate, but it works perfectly
Orkney tweed Loom
It soon became obvious that I was never going to manage to knit socks to use up all the wool the sheep was going to produce so I thought I would see if I could get some rugs made.
I contacted Jamiesons Spinning Mill in Shetland to see if it could be done and they said yes, but I would have to send up at least 200 kilos of raw wool before they could process it. So I managed to source some more black wool from other farmers and I added some white wool as well and shipped 650 kilos to Shetland.
So Orkney Tweed was born.

Qualified through the Scottish Tour Guide Association, we are Lorna and Carrie Brown a mother/daughter team who both love sharing the beauty, history and culture of our Islands.
Our family are originally from one of Orkney’s North Islands called Westray. We moved to Kirkwall on Mainland, Orkney in 2012. On Westray we were beef farmers – one of Orkney’s main industries.
We have many and varied interests and hobbies. Lorna loves delving into family history, travel and photography. Carrie enjoys local music and plays the fiddle. She also is an avid beachcomber, looking for groatie buckies, bottle messages and other treasures. Once finding a 4000 year old remains.

Michael, a born and bred Orcadian, who has been practicing the craft of wood turning for over 28 years, is self-taught. Michael has honed his skills using a combination of practice, experimentation and his desire to produce fine attractive pieces. He was accepted onto the Register of Professional Turners in 2017.
Influence and inspiration is drawn from the works of Neolithic inhabitants of ancient Orkney. During the long bright summer days, the light on the landscapes inspires new designs, while the long dark nights of winter is the time when he is most productive in his workshop.
Wood is obtained from sustainable sources and is processed on site with our own sawmill, from log to finished piece.

We are looking into visiting the Orkney Islands this year and as we have never been before we are doing a little research. We are a family of 5 two aduts and three children aged 6,8 and 14. We are looking for a hotel thats suitable for our family. Can you tell us a little bit about what to do to keep everyone happy? We are pretty sporting and normally spend a lot of time on the beach playing sports and swimming. This is going to be a different type of holiday, but one we are looking forward to.

Thanks
