Information
One of Britain's finest stretches of coast, with cliffs, fine bays and safe sandy beaches interspersed with attractive villages,Whitby has been a port for more than 1,000 years and today is still a seafarer's town.

The narrow streets and alleys climbing down to the quayside still bustle as they have done for centuries, and as folklore and tradition are very much part of the Whitby scene visitors soon find themselves involved.

Film and television producers have also discovered Whitbys charm. As well as the ever popularYorkshire television series Heartbeat,Warner brothers recently used Whitby as its main location for the film 'Possession' staring Gwyneth Poultrow.

From the towns centuries old streets, I 99 steps lead up to the parish Church of St Mary whose church yard inspired Bram Stoker to write his world famous novel Dracula.

We enjoy our food in Sanders Yard. We liked the workers who were helping us with the choices we make on the menu. We love the cakes and we take some back to home. Thank you for nice time in your restaurant.

Our favourite chippy when we go to Whitby, and so good to see them featured on your guide. Always busy but you get served quickly due to the efficiency of the staff.

Holman's Bookshop
Popped in every morning for my newspapers and usually ended up buying something else as well. Its got so many goodies, gifts, toys etc. that its hard to walk out without buying an additional item or two. Its a long established shop as the previous person commented and it is very well run with polite staff.

Holman's Book Shop
Another great addition to The Whitby Harbour Guide. Holman's Book Shop as well as having a great and extensive selection of books, also has a fantastic and large selection of greeting cards, stationery, jigsaws, toys, gifts and newspapers. It was established in 1920, so these guys know exactly what they are doing!

Just returned from updating the Whitby Harbour Guide and it was a pleasure to meet the owners of Sanders Yard. Its a lovely bistro with outside seating and they serve up some fantastic dishes in lovely surroundings. If you have a sweet tooth, and like cakes, you wont be able to resist their selection!

Morningside Hotel by Marina and Mark
A lovely hotel very clean the host Paul and his family were so nice and friendly lovely chatting to them, breakfast was the best I’ve had in a hotel so much to choose from, rooms were very nice with tea/coffee facilities. We had drinks in the hotel bar chatting to Paul before we headed out. We will definitely return.

The Fishermans Wife
We revisited Whitby after a long absence and headed to The Fishermans Wife as we had eaten here on our last visit to Whitby some years ago. Happy to say that it has got even better and we were delighted with the meal and the service. Just nice to see that this lovely fish restaurant is still serving delicious fresh fish with good service.

Hadley's Fish & Chips
So many chippies to choose from in Whitby, but when we saw that it was voted Whitby's best! we had to try it out. Honestly could not fault it in any way. It is much more than your average chippy, although you can get takeaway fish and chips, the restaurant service is great. Its got our vote!

A hidden gem of a place. Been to Whitby quite a few times and noticed the Fish Cottage on this site and thought we would take a look. We cam three days on the trot and each time it was perfect. The setting is beautiful and the food is off the scale! What a find!

Magpie Cafe
Visiting Whitby we had to have at least one meal here. We decided to eat in rather than have a takeaway. Having walked past the day before and seeing the queues we decided to book . We arrived and were promptly shown to our table. The fish as expected was delicious, ass was the rest of the food. The service is good and very well run, this is a VERY busy restaurant but it runs so smoothly. The Magpie Café definitely lived up to expectations for us.

The Fishermans Wife
Probably the best thing about this restaurant is the lovely views of the sea. But The Fisherman's Wife has a lot more going for it than just the views. The staff are very accommodating and seem to genuinely want you to enjoy your visit and the food is nice and fresh and cooked to perfection. Its definitely not the cheapest fish restaurant in Whitby, but its probably the one with the nicest view.

Hadley's Fish & Chips
Nice staff who like a bit of banter and very generous portions. The batter is superb and the whole place, both restaurant and takeaway run very efficiently. There's so many fish and chip restaurants to choose from in Whitby and i cant comment on them, but I can comment on Hadley's and can honestly say the food and service are superb!

I've called in here a few times now for mostly small items or a gas bottle. The guy is always very friendly and makes you feel like he genuinely appreciates your business however small your purchase may be. I always leave with a smile on my face and a restored faith in human kindness.

Fish Cottage
This place is pretty special. It pretty much has everything. The location and setting are beautiful, we hadn't been to Sandsend before and it really is only minutes from Whitby, but a million miles away in character. As you can see from the photos on the advert the restaurant itself is very picturesque and has outside seating. They also offer a takeaway service. They had scallops on the menu when we were there and they were delicious, but these were on the Specials menu so may not always be available. But dont worry, everything we had here was cooked to perfection and as fresh as we have tasted. A must visit when visiting Whitby!

Magpie Café by J & Stephanie
Magpie Café
We had heard about how famous Whitby is for fish and chips before we arrived, so it was no surprise to see four of them featured in your Whitby harbour guide. We opted to try Magpie Café, but when we saw the que we had second thoughts. But we needn't have worried, the staff are obviously used to this and we got served quickly. It was well worth the short wait and we will be coming back for more.

The Fishermans Wife
This is more of a restaurant than a chippy. The views of the beach are stunning and the food is fresh and cooked to perfection. Yes, they serve fish & chips, but to call it a "Chippy" would be an injustice.

Normally big ques outside at lunchtime as this is a very popular chippy with locals and tourists, however, dont let that put ypu of, the service is very quick and efficient and you will get served quicker than you think. Plus its worth the wait.

The Fishermans Wife by Laura & Owen
The Fishermans Wife
This is another high end fish specialist restaurant. When we came to Whitby, we were well aware that it was famous for its vast selection of typical English fish and chip shops. What we weren't aware of was that there are a few top quality fish restaurants serving up delicious fresh produce to a very high standard. The Fishermans Wife is one of these. Get a table by the window overlooking the beach if possible.

Who knew that Whitby has so many charming little hideaways? Sandsend is a quiet area with a lovely beach. The Fish Cottage is a high end fish restaurant. There is plenty of seating both inside and out. The food and service is top quality.

Magpie Café
There was a large que to get into the Magpie Café and we were undecided weather to que up or eat elsewhere. In the end we decided to stay with it. we were surprised at how quickly we got in, and it really was worth the wait. Its probably Whitby's most famous fish and chip restaurant and they really know how to look after their thousands of customers and serve up lovely fresh fish with superb batter. Don't be put off by the ques, its definitely worth the wait.

Hadley's Fish & Chips by Jay & Family
Hadley's Fish & Chips
The name Hadley's Fish & Chips suggests a typical English fish & chip shop, but Hadley's is definitely not. This place would be best described as a specialist fish restaurant with a takeaway facility.
We were passing by Whitby and decided to call in and have lunch here. We decided upon Hadley's and ate in. Everything was perfect, including the portions. They have gluten free dishes etc. The restaurant was very busy but we got a table easy enough. Whitby seems to be inundated with fish and chip restaurants, we cant comment on any of the others, but Hadley's was spot on!

Fish Cottage
We look the 10 minute bike ride from Whitby Harbour (We are slow peddlers) to Sandsend and stopped foe lunch at the Fish Cottage. It really was a good decision to get away from the harbour for a day and have a mooch around Sandsend. The Fish cottage is ideally located as you can see from the photos. To take full advantage of this restaurant we would suggest going on a sunny day as there's plenty of alfresco seating. However most people including locals will have the same idea so I would telephone first and make a reservation just to be on the safe side. Once there its well worth the visit. We will certainly be revisiting.

Well there's no shortage of fish restaurants in Whitby, but non with the view and standard as The Fishermans Wife. Fantastic location overlooking the sea and beach (Depending weather the tide is in or out)
The service is very friendly and the cuisine gets 10 out of 10 from us.
It was very busy when we went, so I would suggest booking.

Great to see the famous Magpie on here and looking so well in the photos. Its been some time since we last visited Whitby, but going through this site brings back some great memories. Hoping to visit at the end of September, and of course we will be calling in the Magpie for our fish and chips.
