A pure bred Yorkshire man was transformed into an Irishman following brain surgery. Chris Gregory woke from the operation at Royal Hallamshire Hospital speaking in a Dublin accent and singing ‘Danny Boy’.
Speaking about the bizarre metamorphosis his then-fiancé Mary said, 'I couldn't believe it when I walked into the ward and heard someone singing 'Danny Boy' really loud… It sounded like a drunken Irishman, and all the racket seemed to be coming from the direction of Chris's bed.'
Gregory apparently has no family, work or social connections with anyone Irish. Fortunately he soon recovered from the rare neurological condition known as Foreign Accent Syndrome and has no memory of the incident.
Mary remains baffled by it all. 'Chris's Yorkshire accent had vanished completely, and he was talking like an Irishman all the time… At one point he looked at me adoringly and said, 'You're da fabbest gal oi know!' with a perfect Irish lilt in his voice.'
How romantic.
