YACHTMASTER 2010 PRESENTED AT BOATSHOW
The prestigious Yachtmaster of the Year Award for 2010 has been given to 23 year old Emily Penn from Cornwall. The accolade which was presented at the London Boat Show is awarded to a student chosen because they have excelled in the Yachtsmaster exam throughout the year.
Examiner, Mike Stratton of Cornish Cruising in Falmouth described Emily as 'an extremely good sailor, a natural skipper and modest with it. It was a pleasure to examine a candidate of such a high standard.'
Emily said, 'It's great to have won this award. I hope it inspires more young people to get involved in sailing and realise there is no limit to what they can achieve.'
The university graduate travelled around the world aboard a bio-fuel Earthrace boat whilst managing an international environmental campaign to promote the use of alternative fuels. On her return she analysed the effect plastic pollution has on the oceans’ eco system. She is now operations manager for Pangaea Exploration and runs exhibitions abouard the 72ft steel hulled Yacht.
Despite clock up over 30,000 nautical miles Emily remains as enthusiastic as ever. 'Sailing around the world was an amazing experience.’ She said. ‘It took me to some of the most inaccessible and beautiful places but it also opened my eyes to the many environmental challenges threatening our oceans... I can't wait to get back on the water and continue tackling these issues.'
Looks like there’s no stopping her.
