YACHT HIJACKED BY PIRATES

Friday November 5th, 2010
Unconfirmed reports have come in that a yacht has been hijacked by Somalian pirates in the Indian Ocean. According to Andrew Mwangura, coordinator of the East African Seafarers Assistance Programme, the vessel was boarded by pirates near the Seychelles. The Foreign Office is ‘aware of this report.
Mr Mwangura has said, 'We as yet don't have the name of the yacht nor do we know the gender of the crew, but we are trying to verify this information which we learnt of this evening (Monday).'
However conflicting reports suggest the yacht was taken close to Lamu Island off Kenya or near Brava in southern Somalia. All reports state that there were three Brits aboard the yacht. Whichever situation proves correct it would seem that reports of an escalation in pirate activity are true.
