WILL SMITH TOPS A LIST
Wednesday February 11th, 2009
The American financial magazine, Forbes has named Will Smith as Hollywood’s most bankable star. The star of ‘I am Legend’ and ‘Hancock’ scored a perfect 10 on the survey. Forbes special projects director John Burman claims the secret of Smith’s success is his ability to star in any movie genre. 'He can move from doing the pop film to an 'Ali' to a 'Seven Pounds' to 'The Pursuit of Happyness,' so he's able to play in all worlds and I think people just like watching him on screen,'
The former ‘Fresh Prince of Bell Air’ was closely followed on the list by Johnny Depp, Leonardo DiCaprio and Hollywood superstar-couple Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie who both scored 9.89.
The ‘Star Currency’ list survey compared the financial clout of over 150 entertainment industry high flyers, looking at the stars’ ability to gain financial backing for a movie project, box office receipts, cultural and international appeal etc.
Since the release of Will Smith’s latest movie ‘Seven Pounds’ (Dec 19 2008) it has taken over $141.6mil worldwide. His previous hit, ‘Hancock’ released last summer has made over $624.4.
Other big hitters on the list include Clint Eastwood at No.20, Shia LaBeouf at No. 33and Keira Knightley at No. 42.
Burman stressed that the international market was the main key to the survey “Some stars have international box office appeal that more than compensates for modest U.S. and Canada ticket sales… Brad Pitt's 2004 movie 'Troy,' for example, made $133.4 million in the U.S. and Canada, but $364 million internationally. His 2006 movie 'Babel' made $101 million internationally, nearly three times U.S. and Canada totals… He's certainly strong in the U.S., but you see the global reach of him.'
