US NAVY TEST DRIVE UNSINKABLE MOTORBOAT
A prototype for a new ‘unsinkable’ plastic powerboat has been put through initial trails on Lake Winnebago in Wisconsin. The 7m craft can reach speeds of up to 40knots and is flexible in design to give a softer ride. If the trials are successful the US Navy intend to develop a 11.8m model.
The $2.5mil prototype is the brainchild of former powerboat racer Stan Widmer and has a 250hp inboard diesel engine. The double walled boat is made from thermoplastic polythene cross-linked material.
According to Mr Widmer, 'This plastic boat is unsinkable... so it would save lives'.
