MISSING TEENAGERS RESCUED AFTER 50DAYS AT SEA
Three teenage boys have been found alive after a 50 day ordeal in the Pacific Ocean. The boys, two aged 15 one aged 14, had been given up for dead after they went missing from Atafu atoll in a small aluminium boat on the 5th October. They survived on coconuts, water they caught in a tarpaulin and a seabird they managed to catch.
They had been presumed dead following unsuccessful searches by the New Zealand air force and a memorial service was held for them. However, the boat was spotted on Wednesday afternoon (25th November) north-east of Fiji by a member of a tuna boat crew.
First mate, Tai Fredricsen said, 'We drew up next to them, and we asked if they needed any help and their reply was a very ecstatic 'yes'... We immediately deployed our rescue craft and got them straight on board and administered basic first aid... They did mention that during the last two days they had started drinking salt water, which could have been disastrous for them... They've got a lot of gusto, a lot of strong mental spirit. Physically they are very disturbing but mentally they are very strong.'
