TALL SHIPS IN SPACE

Wednesday April 6th, 2011
Astronaut Catherine ‘Cady’ Coleman has taken a little bit of Texas nautical history into space. Volunteers at the Galveston Historical Foundation asked if she would take a piece of Elissa on board the International Space Station
The ship was built in Aberdeen in 1877 by Alexander Hall and Co and became the official Tall Ship of Texas. Curator of maritime history at Aberdeen Maritime Museum, Meredith Greiling, said, 'It is very special to have an Aberdeen ship preserved in space like this... I don't know of any other ships honoured in this way.'
The section of ships deck will remain on board the space station after the astronaut returns in May.
