SAVED BY SPACE HOPPER

Thursday October 14th, 2010
A quick thinking young man saved the lives of two teenage girls at the weekend with a Space Hopper.
When 15 year old Charlotte Wright and 16 year old Hannah Woolacott were washed of the pier in Dawlish, Devon they were minutes from drowning when 24 year old Matthew Gibble and his friends Andrew Riches and Leigh Larrat heard their screams and came to the rescue. Having called the coast guard they threw the girls a lifebuoy, however it failed to reach them. Matthew then grabbed a neighbour’s Space Hopper and threw that to the girls, who were about 20 metres out from the sea walls.
The girls clutched the toy and managed to reach the tethered lifebuoy. They were then encouraged to keep their heads above the water by the boys until Exmouth inshore lifeboat arrived. They were then taken to Exeter hospital where they were treated and later released.
