SAILING TOP TIPS BEGINNERS PART 3

Familiarise yourself with sail control. Learning to adjust sail settings to take best advantage of different wind and water conditions is essential if you want to become a decent sailor. During very strong and very light winds the sail should be relatively flat. If the wind is moderate you should aim for a full sail.

Watch out for that boom! Probably the most common sailing injuries happen to sailors not being aware that the boom is about to swing. This can result in a nasty blow to the head of worse still, being knocked overboard. It’s important for sailors of all ability to be conscious and respectful of the boom at all times.

Don’t try and go it alone. There is a lot of help out there. Plenty of good courses, research and guide books and, if you are just starting out, make sure you listen to the advice of more experienced friends.
