In a brave attempt to raise awareness of pollution in the world’s oceans a boat constructed out of plastic bottles has set sail on an epic voyage between San Francisco and Sydney. The vessel named, Plastiki is skippered by Environmentalist and banking heir David De Rothschild will be passing the Great Pacific Garbage Patch and area of the sea filled with waste that is five times the size of the UK.

Mr Rothschild told the BBC, 'It is time we beat waste and this is an out-of-sight, out-of-mind issue that needs to be addressed.'

Plastiki is made out of 12,000 used water bottles, filled with carbon dioxide for durability and buoyancy and is powered by solar, wind and sea turbines. Lap tops are to be powered by an exercise bike and there is a composting- bathroom and gardens to grow food.

Critics have pointed out that if the catamaran breaks up mid voyage it will dump 12,000 more plastic bottles into the ocean.
