ADY GILL SKIPPER ‘UNDER ARREST'
When the skipper of an anti-whaling vessel sunk by the Japanese Institute of Cetacean Research boarded the ship responsible, he planned to put the captain under citizen’s arrest for the attempted murder of six crew members and also hand him a bill for $3mil to replace the sunken Ady Gil. But he got more than he bargained for, when he was ‘arrested’ himself, and is now being held ‘in custody’ aboard the vessel.
Pete Bethune climbed on board the Shonan Maru No 2 from a jet ski under cover of darkness in response to been rammed by the whaling ship in January which caused the loss of the round-the-world trimaran formerly known as Earthrace.
A statement about the incident says, 'The captain of the Shonan Maru No 2 gave notice today that in line with the Japanese Mariners Act he was taking necessary measures and restrained Mr Bethune... Mr Bethune is being held in custody on board the Shonan Maru No 2. Besides the protective net tearing there is no damage to the Japanese vessel nor are there any injuries to the crew.'
