OPEN WATER TRUE LIFE ORDEAL
Saturday May 23rd, 2009
Two hapless middle-aged divers have been rescued after spending 24 hours lost in shark infested waters. Having gone scuba diving in the Gulf of Mexico without anyone to look after their boat Timothy and Paula Allen surfaced to discover that said vessel was beyond reach.
For the next 24hrs they suffered the agonies of hypothermia, hallucinations and total shark fear, not to mention frustration near misses from at least four potential rescue craft. At noon on the second day of their ordeal they spotted a boat that was manned by two teenagers and managed to swim to it. The brothers hauled the couple out of the water.
“I told my husband, this is our last chance. If we don’t do it, we’re going to die,” said 48 year-old Paula.
“It was probably midday the second day. I started having hallucinations and seeing things that weren’t there,” her husband said. “I didn’t trust my eyes, so I had to confirm it with Paula.”
The rescue boat belonged to Patrick Pinder, who was diving with his sons, Patrick Jr., 18, and Garrett, 17. Patrick Snr was snorkelling when the Allen’s swam to the boat. Paula’s first words were, “Oh my God, you saved my life.”
Patrick Jr said, “It was shocking when they said that… Right after, we helped them take off their gear and pulled them up into the boat.”
Patrick Snr said of his son’s action, “I was very proud of them… They did all the right things.”
The Allen’s have fully recovered from their ordeal and intend to continue scuba diving.
The Garret brothers are being hailed as heroes the Allens are being hailed as bloody idiots!
