ONE GOOD TERN. NAUTICAL FUN

An AWOL sailor was caught as he tried to sneak on board his ship in the early hours. The chief petty officer spied him and ordered the sailor to, 'Take this broom and sweep every link on this anchor chain by morning or it's the brig for you!'

The sailor picked up the broom and started sweeping. A few minutes later a Tern landed on the brush handle. The lad tossed the bird away. A few minutes later the tern came back to light once again on the brush handle.

This went on until dawn and the chain didn’t get swept. When the chief petty officer, came to check on the sailor and his work he was angry that nothing much had been done.

'What in the hell have you been doing all night? This chain is no cleaner than when you started! What have you to say for yourself, sailor?' shouted the officer.

'Honest, chief,' said the sailor, 'I tossed a tern all night and couldn't sweep a link!'
