OLD GAFFERS ASSOCIATION JUBILEE

The Isle of Wight is ready to host the celebrations for the 50th anniversary of the Old Gaffers Association in August. The event will mark the jubilee year of the finale of traditional gaff rigged boats that take part in the Round Britain Challenge.

So far this year over forty boats from all over Europe have braved the unpredictable British weather and completed the 2000 mile circumnavigation of the Isles. Others have participated in shorter legs and nearly 250 boats are expected to participate at the OGA Jubilee Festival at Cowes, which is predicted to be the biggest event since records began.

OGA spokesman Sue Lewis told the press, ‘The purpose of the OGA is to promote the gaff rig, so we aim to fill the waters with our boats and show the wider sailing community what we can do. Perhaps we can get more than 150 bowsprits crossing that start line.'

The festival runs from August 15th to 18th, with the main race held on Saturday 17th.
