NIEL MACKENZIE SEARCH CALLED OFF

Thursday October 7th, 2010
SEARCH FOR MISSING YACHTSMAN IS ABANDONED
The search for missing yachtsman Neil Mackenzie has been called off by the coastguard. The 59 year-old had not been in contact for a week before his wife, Sarah, raised the alarm having set sail from Arisaig in the Highlands homeward bound to Aberdeen.
Several coastguard crews have been involved in the search. His 30ft sloop, Soltaire was found anchored at Eilean a' Ghaill on the Rhu Peninsula, just south of Arisaig. Despite the sea search being abandoned the police continued the search on land.

A spokesman for Stornoway Coastguard said, 'There were plans to continue on Saturday, but we reassessed it and discussed it with the police... The area we were looking to cover had been covered very well. It is now a missing person case. The search has officially terminated from the coastguard side.'
