New historic photos of Joshua Slocum and his famous yacht Spray have been discovered in an envelope marked “Slocum, 1906”. The photos are now in the possession of Bill Springer, grandson-in-law of the elderly woman whose family had spent their summers about 100 miles from where Slocum rebuilt the Spray, given to him initially as an old wreck in a field.
Slocum went on to become the first man to sail solo around the world covering 46,000 miles single handed, the yacht becoming famous for its self steering qualities and the inspiration for many modern copies.
