NAKED ROWER IN RESCUE DRAMA
A naked Irishman has had to abandon his bid to become the youngest man to row across the Indian Ocean. Keith Whelan was hit by a huge wave in rough seas off Western Australia and sustained a head injury. The 30 year old was also hoping to become the first Irishman to complete the 3,720 mile crossing and had decided to do so naked to draw more attention to the challenge and raise money for ‘Keep a Child Alive’, a charity dedicated to helping children and families affected by HIV/AIDS.
Keith told the press, “At first I thought this was complete madness but at the same time it appealed to me... I am a risk taker and risking your life to achieve a dream is the biggest risk you can take.'
Mr Whelan actually started his epic voyage from Geraldton on 7th May but bad weather forced him ashore on the Abrohlos Islands off the Western Australian Coast. He had waited for conditions to improve before setting off again but once again the weather turned bad. Following the accident he was rescued by a Japanese ship.
