ONE OF OUR SUBMARINES IS MISSING
A cash reward has been offered to anyone finding a 6 foot long submersible robot that has been lost in the Gulf of Mexico by the Mote Marine Laboratory in Florida. The £60,000 winged sub, ‘Waldo’ was sent on a mission to research phytoplankton on 25th August but is thought to have sprung a leak or got snagged. This is important research as this particular plankton is the algae that produce harmful red tide. The drone has not surfaced to send its regular 2 hourly satellite report since Monday.
Marine biologist Dr Gary Kirkpatrick of the Mote Laboratory said, 'There's a possibility it could be found by boaters or beachgoers... But we'd really like to get it back because its loss would be quite a dent in our efforts to stay on top of red tide.'
The reward for recovery is $500.
