This year’s Superyacht Cup Palma in Mallorca is to have a new home and a makeover. The 2009 event will be relocated to the Muelle Viejo dock near the old city centre and have moorings for 22 boats. Although the event doesn’t kick off until 24th June there are already 14 yachts registered including Windrose, Hyperion, Ganesha and the new 45m Wally Saudade.

The move brings the regatta closer to Palma’s most popular hotels restaurants and bars and should be a big improvement on the commercial wharves used for the last two years. This year’s event will also be using the Bucket Regatta rating system used at the St. Barths and Newport Bucket regattas. Race director Patrick Whetter had this to say about the 2009 event. “We are looking forward to close racing (the end of sandbagging) and far more course variations than in previous years… We will also offer an IRC Class should demand be sufficient.'

The change of location has also attracted back plenty of sponsors. Organisers believe the proximity to the historic ‘La Lonja’ area with the spectacular Cathedral directly opposite and the glamorous shopping streets of the Borne and Jaime III only a short walk away will attract new blood. Sponsors already on board include Main Partners Abu Dhabi Tourism Authority, Gold level sponsors Camper and Nicholson’s International and Slam, as well Official level sponsors Astilleros de Mallorca, The Rolling Stock Group, Holland Jachtbouw, North Sails, Ship Equip, Reckmann, Dohle, Atollvic, Pantaenius, Pendennis and Claasen Jachtbouw.
