COURT SUCCESS TEEN SETS SAIL ON RECORD VOYAGE
Dutch teenager Laura Dekker has won her legal battle and has set sail in an attempt to become the youngest solo around-the-world sailor. The 14 year old won a court case in April against Dutch social services who claimed that the voyage could harm her emotional and social development. But Laura, who grew up on a boat was determined to go ahead with her record breaking challenge.
Having left the Netherlands with her father earlier this month she set sail from Portugal on the first leg of the trip, which could last up to two years and involve over 20 stops. Dutch media firm, Masmedia, Marijke Schaaphok will be filming the voyage via remote cameras aboard the Guppy. The company’s director told Associated Press, 'She grew up with her father on a boat so she's completely different from a normal 14-year-old girl... She's very wise and a little bit impatient, but she's a very nice girl and she knows exactly what she wants.'
To beat the record Laura has to return by her 17th birthday in September 2012.
