LARGEST SOLAR POWERED BOAT

Thursday December 23rd, 2010
GIANT SOLAR POWERED SUCCESS.
The world’s largest solar-powered boat has arrived at UN Climate Conference after successfully crossing the Atlantic. The £16mil Türanor left Monaco in September with the aim of becoming the first solar-powered vessel to complete a circumnavigation via the Panama and Suez canals.
Türanor’s owner, Immo Stroeher, said, 'The theme of this ship and its around-the-world voyage is to create consciousness about what you can do with solar energy.'
The 31metre catamaran stores solar energy in batteries throughout the day and is able to travel without sunlight for up to three days at 7.5 knots (it’s maximum speed is around 9 knots) or up to 15 days at slower speeds.
