Sunday August 2nd, 2009
ImageGreat Britain’s ultimate nautical war machine has been christened by the Countess of Wessex in Portsmouth HMS Daring was officially commissioned into the fleet at the weekend in front of hundreds of guests that included family members of the 190 ship’s company.

Commanding officer of the £165m Type 45 destroyer, Captain Paddy McAlpine read the Commisioning Warrant and there was a fly past by two typhoon fighter jets from 11 Squadron RAF. During his speech the obviously proud captain said, 'I am fortunate to have an excellent ship's company who are all working extremely hard to bring HMS Daring, the first of its class, into service so that she may continue to contribute to the navy's global commitments and provide air defense at a level previously unseen.'

The second of six Type destroyers that will be based in Portsmouth, HMS Dauntless, is due to arrive in Portsmouth next year.
