STEVE AND DAWN IN BARCELONA MARATHON
Harbourguides crew members Steve Mallinson and Dawn ‘Elbows’ Wild are on the run again, but this time it’s not just a ‘fun run’ it’s serious stuff. Sunday 6th March sees our two intrepid heroes taking on their biggest challenge to date – The Barcelona Marathon, 26 miles of hot streets and spectacular architecture at jogging pace. It’s sure to be a gruelling, if cultural, experience but Steve is confident that he and Dawn can complete the course in around 4hours.
“We’ve been training for months... Running about 30 plus miles a week said Steve.” I’m feeling really fit but Barcelona is pretty daunting... Running during the winter in England is quite a bit different from Spain... It’s going to be pretty damn hot... Still I reckon we’ll do it.”
The race was originally called the Catalunya Marathon when it began in 1978 but the name changed in 2005 to encourage international (and most importantly US) appeal. It now attracts thousands of runners from all over the world and is a major event on the Spanish calendar. The Marathon starts at the Placa de Espanya at the bottom of the Olympic Hill - Montjuic - and takes in such famous sites as Nou Camp, Gaudi's Sagrada Familia and Pedrera and La Rambla before returning to to Placa de Espanya for the finish.
You can follow Steve and Dawn’s progress on the interactive map featured on the web site www.barcelonamarato.es/eng. Steve’s bib number is 14761.
In the meantime the Harbourguide’s Crew wish them both the very best of luck. Go for it you two!
