YACHT CLUB CHRISTMAS LUNCH IN PERIL

A Christmas lunch ended dramatically when the Fire Brigade were called to Essex Yacht Club
to rescue over 100 members when they became stranded aboard their floating clubhouse. The former Royal Navy minehunter Wilton, which has been converted into a clubhouse moved during the celebration leaving its gangway to dangerous to use.

Firefighters eventually secured the gangplank with a winch before assisting guests ashore. The operation took around an hour.

Divisional officer Martin Powell said of the incident, 'The crews did a fantastic job... It was an unusual rescue requiring no small amount of innovation on their part to get everyone safely off.'
