EBAY SOLUTION TO VOLCANO CRISIS

Wednesday April 21st, 2010
An IT consultant stuck in Sweden due to the volcanic ash crisis was so determined to get home to his heavily pregnant wife that he bought a car on eBay and drove the 1,200 home. 40year old Martin Hobbs told the press, 'I was going to fly back on Thursday afternoon, but in the morning, I heard about the volcano. I don't think the seriousness of it sunk in until later... I went to the airport and they said I could have my money back or book the next available Ryanair flight. They said there was one on Saturday morning, so I said that will have to do. But it is a natural disaster so there are no guarantees.'
When the Saturday flight was cancelled he decided enough was enough and that he had to get back to 38year old Karen who is eight months pregnant. He logged onto eBay, put in the winning bid of 900 for the 1988 Saab 9000 which he nicknamed Helga and set off home from Stockholm. Along the way he supplemented his petrol bill by picking up other stranded travellers including fellow Brit John Kingham and two Belgians. 26 hours later he was back with his wife and two children in Peterborough... very tired but very relieved..
