DIESEL BUG EXPLAINED

Wednesday January 26th, 2011
FEARS OF DIESEL BUG EPIDEMIC ABATED

Fears of a diesel bug epidemic have been calmed by three of the UKs largest marina operators. Premier Marinas, MDL Marinas and Yacht Havens Group have spoken out to assure pleasure boaters that they are fully aware of the potential problems brought about by new fuel quality regulations handed down by the EU. The companies are taking steps to ensure that suppliers do not sell road diesel to marinas. This is because it can contain up to 7% biodiesel which is water attracting and contains fatty acid methyl esters. When both these factors are combined it provides the ideal environment for the proliferation of diesel bug.

MDL have negotiated with Shell to supply only low-sulphur, biodiesel-free fuel and have agreed to check every delivery for biodiesel content. Both Yacht Havens and Premier have implemented similar policies. However until early summer Shell can only supply low-sulphur diesel with up to 2% biodiesel which should not prove a problem. Despite this Premier is taking precautions and adding Soltron to all fuel sold from their marinas.
