DIAMOND THIEF FOILED BY X-RAY

A Spanish thief thought he was being smart by swallowing a stolen diamond but was caught when police forced him to undergo an X-ray.

The £10,000 diamond had been taken out of a pendant that a British woman had in her handbag, which was stolen at a restaurant in Marbella. According to reports she had left her handbag which also contained other valuables and nearly £2000 in cash on the floor.

A police spokesman said, 'Two well-dressed men came in, one sitting at the bar and the other next to the woman.'

The thief was caught in a vehicle at a routine checkpoint. The four occupants all had criminal records so the police searched the car and found the woman’s handbag, valuables and cash. However the diamond from the pendant was missing.

'During the operation, officers noticed one of the men putting his hand to his mouth,' said the police. 'This gesture and the fact that they had found the pendant without the diamond made the police think he may have swallowed it... 'To find the stone, those arrested were taken to a medical centre where they underwent X-rays, and the diamond was located inside the stomach of one of them, who admitted swallowing it.'
