CAT CALLED FOR JURY SERVICE

Wednesday January 26th, 2011
11 ANGRY MEN AND A CAT?
Only in America! Anna Esposito of Boston, MA was somewhat taken aback when her pet cat, Tabby Sal was summoned for jury service. She wrote to Suffolk Superior Court to point out that they had made a mistake and that Sal is ”unable to speak and understand English'. She also included a letter from the vet confirming that he is 'a domestic short-haired neutered feline'.
However, when the jury commission replied they insisted that the cat “must attend” on March 23rd despite him actually being listed on the census in the section for ‘domestic animals’. Mrs Esposito said, 'When they ask him ‘guilty or not guilty?’ What's he supposed to say – ‘miaow?’.. Sal is a member of the family so I listed him on the last census form under pets but there has clearly been a mix-up.'
What is even more worrying is that when she looked into how the system works the website for the US Judicial System states that jurors are 'not expected to speak perfect English'.
Shouldn’t that be ‘purrfect English?’
