PARALYMPICS TO SET SAIL ON THE FIRST DAY OF SEPTEMBER

The British 2012 Paralympic Games will welcome a total of 80 athletes at Weymouth Bay and Portland Harbour. The Events take place on 1st September and are split into single-person, two-person and three-person keelboat categories. They are mixed events although rules state that there must be at least one female member of any three-person crew. Each event has up to 11 races with the aim to score the lowest number of cumulative points.

The specially designed boats have open cockpits to maximize space. 2.4mR boats are used for single events, Skud 18 for double and Sonar for three-person races, with equipment varied to suit each disability group.

The event is open to visually impaired, amputee, cerebral palsy, wheelchair and 'les autres' (others) athletes, who are awarded additional points according to the severity of their disability in relation to sailing (maximum 14 points per crew of three).
