BLACKPOOL 10K CHARITY RUN

Things got very sporty for Harbourguides at the weekend when two members of the crew entered and successfully completed the Beaverbrooks Blackpool 10K Fun Run. In recent years the event has raised over £1mil for local charities and this year could well set a new record for the fund raiser.

Harbourguides fitness fanatics Steve Mallinson and Dawn ‘Elbows’ Wild began the race hemmed in at the back of the pack and took nearly five minutes to cross the start line. It was Dawn’s ‘take-no-prisoners’ approach to the race that won her a new middle name.

“Dawn was just ahead of me. The prom was packed and I could hear her talking to herself,” said Steve. “It suddenly occurred to me that she wasn’t taking to herself at all. She was talking to me and to be honest most of what she was saying I wouldn’t like to repeat. All of a sudden she said she’d had enough. I thought she was going to give up instead she just started elbowing her way through the crowd. I tried to keep up but her technique was too good and she lost me. I nicknamed her ‘Elbows’ at the end of the race.”

Despite the slow start Steve crossed the finish line in 60minutes and 30 seconds where he met Dawn who had finished in 59 minutes exactly. Now they are busy counting up how much they’ve raised for the fund.

When I asked Dawn if she was up for competing next year she replied, “Just try stopping me. And next year I’m wearing elbow pads!”

Well done guys!
