ARK ROYAL UP FOR AUCTION
HMS Ark Royal has been put up for auction on the MoD website. The former flagship was decommissioned a fortnight ago as part of the coalitions defence budget review. Her twenty five years service included leading the UK’s naval forces during the Iraq invasion.
Her retirement may well see her avoiding the same end as sister ship HMS Invincible which was sold for scrap. Suggestions include turning her into a commercial heliport, a base for security staff at the London Olympics, a school and a nightclub.
Bidders have been invited to view Ark Royal on the 3rd and 4th of May at her home port Portsmouth Naval Base. However potential buyers must first present the MoD with an outline of ‘intentions regarding the vessel. They will then have until 10 am on June 13th to submit their tenders.
