Information
NAIRN
Dating back to the 4th century, the ancient fishing port of Nairn didn’t become a popular holiday destination until the 1800s, attracting visitors keen to explore the Highlands, Moray Firth coastline and nearby Loch Ness. Home to one of the only two colonies of dolphins in the UK, today’s Nairn is also a magnet for marine enthusiasts and yachtsmen keen to get a glimpse at these most fascinating of sea creatures. As a result the old fishing harbour has received a new lease of life as a berthing site for pleasure craft, many of which join in the frequent racing events organised by the local sailing club.
The town has two award winning sandy beaches and the climate is such that during the summer you can actually spend some quality time there with your bucket and spade. There is a distinctly ‘old world’ ambience about Nairn which is becomes most apparent when you stroll along Harbour Street where you’ll discover a colourful selection of shops – ice cream parlour, bridal shop, general store and tattooist to name a few. There are also several fine restaurants offering mouth-watering dining and friendly service and for that after dinner tipple the local pubs are amongst the most charming in Scotland.
Nairn is a truly magical place. Nestled in an area of outstanding natural beauty you could be forgiven for thinking time has stood still. The hustle and bustle of 21st century life has not so much been forgotten about as never actually reached there. A lovely place for a family holiday by the sea and an ideal base from which to explore the surrounding, and truly spectacular coastline, Nairn cannot help but put its spell on you.
