During these long wars with France letters of marque and reprisal were issued by the English Crown as a license, authorising the Privateer to attack and capture vessels of a nation at war with the Crown.
This lucrative enterprise gave rise to riches in all of the Channel Islands
So who knows... there might still be a treasure dug down in the back of our Sculpture Gardens

A really off the wall quite eccentric wine bar come gallery and a great experience. This is just the kind of place that makes this quaint little island so unique and special. I urge anyone who visits Alderney to visit this establishment at least once whilst they are here.
