About Haddock Watersport
In 1987, Philippe van Thiel started a sailing school on a piece of land on 't Weerwater in Almere.
At that time, there were virtually no water sports facilities in this young, rapidly growing city, and so he was the first to come up with the idea to start a sailing school, originally under the name “Zeilschool voor de wind” (Sailing School for the Wind).
The first season starts with a few Optimists and Varunas, a number of instructors, and three shipping containers. The instructors stand at the market weekly with a small sailboat and a stack of brochures, and in this way, the first students are attracted. Two shipping containers are used as storage for the equipment, and the third serves as a bar.
