Ian Pirrie writing in Practical Boat Owner points out the weaknesses of the Yanmar exhaust elbow. The elbow contains an inner tube so that cooling water passes over the gases discharging through the inner tube. As the seawater is extremely corrosive, failure at the joining weld is common and can result in major engine damage due to water entering through the open exhaust port. Regular examination of the elbow is recommended and further details are available through this link
