HOW DO YOU PROVE THAT VAT HAS BEEN PAID ON BOAT?

I am currently cruising the Med,in an English regisitered yacht and have heard horror stories about yachts being impounded because they dont have proof that the VAT has been paid. The Brokers tat my boat had first been sold has stopped trading many years ago. I do have photocopy evidence that VAT was paid by the initial purchaser from new. But surely anyone could doctor a document such as this. So what I would like to know, is there a register somewhere, or would the HMRC have some knowledge or proof that VAT had been paid? Upto now I have only had to produce my documents in marinas, but should I get stopped by higher authorities I am sure they may ask for better proof.
Do any of you have a solution?
Ben
