LAURA DEKKER CIRCUMNAVIGATION AT 13 Thursday August 20th, 2009
Image13 YEAR OLD PLANS CIRCUMNAVIGATION

Despite Dutch civil servants refusing to give her permission for the time off school, 13 year-old Laura Dekker is determined to set sail in a bid to become the youngest person ever to sail around the world single handed. She intends to continue education during her two year voyage via e-mail and self study. Others have protested on the grounds of her becoming ill and possible pirate attacks. However Laura has the full backing of her parents, who took seven years to circumnavigate.

Laura is no stranger to the ocean and was born aboard a boat in New Zealand. Her parents believe that she will actually get a better education at sea than she would get from attending school.

She plans to set sail from the Netherlands and head to the Canary Islands before crossing the Atlantic to Panama. By 2010 she hopes to have reached Australia. She will then sail through the Gulf of Aden and the Suez Canal to reach the Med then back to Holland.

Good luck little tiger.
