IN THE OFFING ORIGIN

IN THE OFFINGWhen something is likely to happen soon it is said to be in the offing. The origin for this phrase is relatively straight forward and, as all things Harbour Guides is a nautical term. The offing refers to the sea just beyond the shoreline that stretches to the horizon. Look outs on the shore would first catch sight of approaching ships when they were in the offing. They were usually expected to reach dock before the next tide hence their arrival was inevitably going to be very soon.

ANGELSEY TO ISLE OF MAN IN A PUMPKIN

It sounds like something out of a childrens story book, but award winning vegetable gardener, Medwyn Williams, is planning to sail to the Isle of Man in a pumpkin. The 67year-old is currently growing a 725kg gourd at his hometown of Llanfairpwll on Angelsey and hopes to raise money for the Help for Heroes Campaign. The pumpkin boat will be fitted with a seat and outboard motor and Mr Williams is confident that the 15cm thick sides will be strong enough to withstand the elements. The Chelsea Flower Show award winner had this to say about the stunt.'I am totally confident this can be done - we shall call her HMV Cinderella... Her Majesty's Vegetable... I have done tests with smaller pumpkins and they float well. I might just make it to the Isle of Man.'

BUSINESS MAN SMUGGLES FAKE DIAMOND

When an Angolan Businessman was caught by customs officers trying to smuggle a blood diamond he was expecting to be locked up for a good few years. As it happened the huge gemstone turned out to be a fake. Instead of being worth the estimated £2.2mil he expected it was worth around £18.Because he had not actually carried out the crime he thought he had the man was subsequently released without charge. But Frankfurt Airport customs officer, Juergen Bland, reported that despite being free the man didnt seem particularly happy.Everyone was surprised. Especially the person who had been carrying it. He thought it was worth millions but has been released because, despite what he thought, he wasn't actually doing anything illegal,' he said. 'Our understanding is that he paid a substantial amount for the worthless trinket - we think it may have been switched after he had examined the real gem or else he didn't check properly what he was buying.'Following the court case, Prosecutor Doris Moeller-Scheu, said, 'Instead of losing his freedom he's lost a fortune its like they say - crime doesn't pay.'

ENSEARCH ALL-OVER BOAT CLEANER

This new range of cleaning products was developed when chemical engineers Jim Herculson was cleaning his yacht and worked out that virtually every GRP cleaner on the market is abrasive through the effort required to apply and remove them. Ensearch cleaners are applied with a car cleaning brush. After two minutes the chemicals bind with the grime and are ready to be hosed off.The Fibre Glass Hull Cleaner cleans off waterlines, pollution and rust marks. It can also be used to shine up your brightwork and aluminium. The All-Over Cleaner can be used to clean up fuel spillage stains, Exhaust stains, scuffs and general marks. All in all an excellent product which reduces wear and tear, time spent and virtually does away with the elbow grease usually associated with the job. At £16 per litre its well worth it.

FATHOM OUT ORIGIN

FATHOM OUTThe term used to describe working something out from the facts is derived from the use of the measurement fathom which was the distance from finger tip to finger tip (approx 6ft). To ascertain the depth of the water below a ship a weighted rope was used with knots tied at six feet intervals. This simple method of calculation was known as fathoming out.

CLARKSON MEETS MANDELLA

CLARKSON TELLS MANDELA HES BEEN TO THE MOONWhen Jeremy Clarkson met nelson Mandela at a charity event for his 46664 HIV and Aids awareness campaign he was left in a state of confusion. The former South African president had mistaken the Top Gear host for an American astronaut. However, instead of correcting Mr Mandela, 49year-old Clarkson pretended he had actually visited the moon.'It was tricky. I couldn't very well say that we weren't astronauts as that might look argumentative, said Clarkson, Nor could I say that we made a poky BBC2 programme about cars - because then he might wonder what on earth we were doing wasting his valuable time... I did what I thought best and said it was very rocky and dusty and there was not much gravity.'Clarkson had been so nervous when he was first introduced to the iconic leader he asked him if he had ever visited a lap-dancing club.Surreal Jeremy, very surreal.

A SHOT ACROSS THE BOWS ORIGIN

A SHOT ACROSS THE BOWSOften used metaphorically in modern days, to fire a shot across the bows means to give someone a warning. Original it was common naval practice for a ship to fire a cannon shot across the bows of an adversarys ship to demonstrate they were ready for battle. The first mention in print can be found in a piece from the Wisconsin Democrat dated December 1939: 'In a very brief space we neared our victim, a large merchantman, whose appearance promised at once an easy conquest and a rich booty. At a signal from Stamar, a shot was fired across her bows to bring her to. She immediately hoisted a white flag.'

DRUG SQUAD SMUGGLER

DRUG SQUAD OFFICER BECOMES DRUG SMUGGLING MASTERMINDIn 2007 a former drug squad officer teamed up with a convicted cop killer in a plot to smuggle £235 million worth of cocaine from the Caribbean to Ireland. They planned to do so aboard a £100,000 35ft catamaran bought especially for the job. However as the ex copper, 49year old Michael Daly, and his accomplice, 50year old Perry Wharrie, set off on the 27 day voyage from Barbados to Cork customs men in Colombia were already eavesdropping from on sat-phone calls. When the smugglers reached the waters off cork things began to go horribly wrong when one of the inflatables they were using to tranship the drugs ashore capsized dropping 62 bales of cocaine into the sea. Daly and Wharrie managed to get shore but were immediately arrested by Irish police.Daly who is currently serving eight years for another smuggling job has admitted masterminding the plot. He, Wharrie (who went to prison last year) and four other men involved are now awaiting sentence.Ironically the catamaran was called Luck Day.

TOE THE LINE ORIGIN

TOE THE LINEThe space between the planks of a ships deck were packed with a material called oakum and sealed with tar creating long, straight lines roughly six inches apart. When the crew was asked to fall in they used the gaps as a marker with their toes touching the line. Also young crew members (ships boys or young officers) who were deemed in need of punishing for minor offences were made to stand with their toes touching the line, without talking or moving, for hours at a time in all weathers. Hence the term toe the line, meaning to do as one is told or behave as expected.

TOY SOLDIERS IN WAR ZONE... OFFICIAL!The war with Iraq is already a delicate subject to most of us but this story really does take the bizarre biscuit. The US military is currently investigating a photograph posted on an Iraqi militant website of a supposed marine who is being held hostage. The trouble is that there are no US marines reported missing and whats more experts are convinced that it is actually a picture of an Action Man toy.Spokesman for Dragon Models, Liam Cusack said: 'It is our doll... to me it definitely looks like it is. Everything the guy is wearing is exactly what comes with our figure.'I say we go in and save him anyway!
