Information
The third largest Channel Island, Alderney is one of the rare unspoiled corners of Britain. With a population of a little under two and a half thousand, its reputation as a peaceful, relaxing getaway is matched only by the locals’ reputation for warm welcomes and traditional jovial hospitality. Easily explored by foot the fascinating and beautiful Island is only one and a half miles wide by three and a half miles long and boasts a mild comfortable climate.

Like its neighbours, Guernsey and Jersey, Alderney is independently governed, but unlike the larger islands, and despite its proximity to mainland France (10 miles west of Normandy), it remains more or less entirely free from mainstream tourism. Remote as Alderney may be it is surprisingly easy to visit as it has its own harbour and airport with direct scheduled flights to and from the UK.

Alderney, one of Britain’s best-kept secrets.

Cycle and Surf Bike Hire Alderney
Having lived on Guernsey for many years, I am ambarrased to say that I had never visited Alderney before and probably wouldnt have done so without the Pandemic. With little options available for a holiday we like many others decided to have a look. what a pleasant surprise! we have fallen in love with the place and its so easy for us to get to. I have to agree with the comments on here that the best way to discover Alderney is by bycicle and you wont find a more friendly family business anywhere than Cycle and Surf.

VISITING ALDERNEY
Just planned our trip(with fingers crossed) to the Channel Islands this summer. Our original idea was to visit Guernsey and Sark, we didnt really fancy Jersey. having looked throgh the Alderney harbourguide we are interested in coming over and having a look. Whats the best way? ferry or flight? there will probably be four of us?

Sat here in lockdown reminiscing about all our past holidays over the years. This is the first year in 30 that we have not had a Summer holiday. Of all the places we have visited over the years the Channel Islands remain our favourite.
We have added some comments to the businesses we have visited in the past, its great to see they are still trading and shows the strength and resilliance of the islanders.
Love you Alderney, hope to visit this year xx

Well we are back home now from our three months cruising holiday on our yacht Almida.
We spent almost six weeks cruising around the Channel Islands. We used the guide's and noticed that it seems customary to leave reviews on the businesses for future visitors.
Well we visited so many over this period of time, so we will be posting our reviews over a period of time.
It's trying to remember our experiences in each case.
Anyway we are going to give it a try.
Hope you're visitors to the guide's find our comments of use when making decisions on where to go.

Sailing the Channel Islands this summer for the first time. Alderney is on our agenda. We are not that familiar with these islands and they look quite challenging to sail around. Is there anything I should be especially looking out for, perils etc.
We have the pilot books etc. and have sailed for many years, but in the Med where the tide is non existent.

I see you are updating your Channel Islands Harbour Guides. I have friends from Northern France who are sailing to Jersey, Guernsey, Alderney, Sark etc. this Summer. We are going to visit them and help out crewing etc. but dont want to stay on the boat full time and are looking for accommodation. I see you have an accommodation feature on Harbourguides, is this for holiday makers or for crew members? We are on a tight budget and I think a feature on budget price hotels on your guides would be a goods idea.

New french restaurant called Le Pesked in town, excellent.

The chef chowder chorizo, with harricot beans and coriander and ended
with apple tart with toffee ice cream.

Love your Harbour Guide and found it very useful during our visit to Alderney. Its nice to use a marine orientated website that makes things simple and uses normal language instead of yachting terms all the time. Not all us boat owners understand all the jargon. Adding restaurants, bars, shops, and things to do, really has made it a valuable holiday guide for us.
Keep up the good work

Love this island, and found your guide extremely helpful in finding things to do, places to eat, and of course marine services etc. After talking to other yachtsmen, it seems you are getting a cult following, as you differ from other marine guides, as you give an all round impression of each harbour you compile your guides to.For this I complement you, and encourage you to keep up the god work, as it really is appreciated.
Thanks

Hi Bob
Thanks for letting us know about Europcar in Alderney. We will delete this service from our database. Alderney is due to be updated early next year, and as we have well over five thousand advertisers with us it’s difficult to find out when one is no longer in service if the company don’t contact us to let us know. The good news however is that we have so many visits to our site that someone like yourself usually informs us if a business or service is no longer available.
We will replace the vacant “Car Hire” service with an appropriate one once we have completed our update.
So thanks for informing us.
Regards

We stayed at The Blonde at La Frette or La Frette Farm as some people call it and we ate at their hotel restaurant “The Blonde Hedgehog” I have left a review on La Frette Farm, and just to confirm, everything was perfect and we will be staying again in the future. The farm is self catering and has a superb kitchen that is very well equipped, so if you prefer to do your own cooking its not a problem. The cuisine served up at the hotel restaurant is fabulous, so even if you do your own catering, I would suggest eating here at least once to enjoy the experience.

Cycle & Surf Bike Hire
We are re-visiting Alderney again this year (Its only our second visit) the last time we were here we used our fold up bikes from the boat. Although we enjoyed this mode of transport, the island is pretty hilly, especially the ride from Braye Harbour to the village. So, this year we are considering hiring electric bikes, especially after reading these reviews. Neither of us have tried an electric bike before, and are looking forward to the experience. One question though, if the battery goes flat on a bike ride, are the bikes as easy to pedal as a normal bike? And how long would it take to charge up again? Any advice on this would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks

Mai Thai Restaurant
Well, who would have thought that the beautiful but small island of Alderney would host one of the best Thai restaurants I've ever eaten in. The whole experience is terrific from start to finish. The family who own and run the restaurant are charming and very polite. We last ate here on our trip to the Channel islands 2 years ago. We are repeating our journey again this summer and the first thing Ollie said to me was "I cant wait to have a meal at the Mai Thai Restaurant" Thats how much we enjoyed it.
We look forward to seeing you again around mid July.

An absolute necessity to have a service like this on Alderney especially for visiting yachtsmen. We had sailed over from Poole and had just bought a new outboard for the tender. We were pretty "Cheesed off" to say the least when we saw Mainbrayce stocked the same make and model at a fraction of the price. Cruising the Channel Islands this summer and obviously Alserney is on our list. We like to explore and get around when we visit places. We intend hiring a car for Jersey and Guernsey and using our Bromptons for Sark. However we are undecided what to do for Alderney. We think it would be to big for our Bromptons, but would hiring electric bikes be sufficient to get discover the island? we are planning on staying on Alderney for around a week.
Thanks in advance

Food, Rooms and service all very food. Nice location in between the harbour and the village making it a nice walk to either. The owner is well known as a top French chef, so its no surprise that the food is to a very high quality.

Mainbrayce Alderney
Mainbrayce off an essential to any visitor to Alderney by boat. It has a surprisingly well stocked chandlers, and as with most chandlers these days, they will source and order anything they don't have in stock. It has a fuel berth with very competitive prices and stock and sell new and used outboards.
Also as a great addition there is now a very nice bar restaurant on the doorstep.

Reynards Jewellers by Janet & Lee
Reynards Jewellers Alderney
another independent gem on this island, Reynards is probably classed as a jewelers, but has lots of other gifts and goodies in a very well displayed shop. Situated at the beginning of Victoria Street (Or the end depending what direction you are going) you won't miss it as its double fronted and the window displays are very prominent. The owner is very pleasant and isn't pushy, but will offer good advice on his products.

This is another one of the shops that make Alderney a unique place to visit. Sew Much Fun has all the charm and personal touches that only an independent business can offer. No "Chain Store" or "National" companies can come close to the service you get from here.

The Quarterdeck Restaurant Alderney
The first time we visited Alderney this restaurant was just about to open, but unfortunately we had to set off before hand. So we were really looking forward to seeing it this summer on our visit this summer. What a great job they have done and Braye Harbour definitely needed something like this. It has a French feel to it and the seafood is obviously very fresh and we think sauced locally. Nice view over the harbour and plenty going on to keep you occupied. All in all a very welcome addition to the Alderney eating scene, and an absolute necessity for Braye Harbour.

Mai Thai Restaurant Alderney
It was a pleasant surprise when we received the PDF copy of the harbour guide and saw there was a Thai restaurant on the island. We checked it out and fortunately didn't have to book, (We would recommend booking though as it can get very busy) The food is typical Thai, and is very good. If you are coming from Braye Harbour, you will probably see it. It has a nice atmosphere and we enjoyed eating in, although it is close enough to the harbour to take the food back to the boat.

This hardware store is easy to find on Victoria Street (The main street in Alderney) on the left as you go up the street. Its actually bigger than you think when you get inside and has a good array of typical hardware merchandise. I always call in hardware shops before i visit a chandlers to see what they have, as its normally a lot cheaper, and Chrissies is no exception.

Attached to the bike hire Cycle and Surf both shops are family owned and run. We let Jez hire the bikes while the girls had a good look around the clothes. We were very impressed by the range and the prices. As with almost every business here, the staff(Or owners) were very relaxed and happy to engage in conversation without trying to sell you something. Its probably the main thing that seperates locations that appreciate the visitors and tourists and those who merely tolerate them. We are happy to say that Alderney is in the former catagorie.
We agree strongly with previous comments throughout this guide. Come and visit Alderney and help keep this island and other special places ticking over for us all to enjoy for many years to come.

Cycle & Surf Bike Hire by Almida Crew
There's a couple of bike hire companies on the island, one quite close to the harbour and this one on the way to the village. We chose this simply because it was on the guide. We were met by a very friendly guy, who we think was the owner. Very helpful and gave us good advice on where to go. We were not afraid of having the bikes stolen (Although we did keep them locked) and weather permitting it really is the idealic way to get to see Alderney. You need a moderate of fitness, but f you dont want too much effort try an electric bike. They have progressed so much over recent years. You deffinitely still have to put the effort in (Especially from the harbour to the village) but you can travel so much further and quicker. We hope to return the the Channel Islands this year and Alderney is one of the main draws for us. Its so important to spend a liitle with the comunity when visiting. The local businesses work very hard and really do rely on us spending a little for survival as much as we rely on them for providing us with the unique experience that only these small personal islands can.
The Almida Crew will be back soon xx

We have to agree with Tony and Anna, this is much more than a jewellers or gift shop. Its difficult to visit without buying at least one item. We bought some good deck shoes that were very in-expensive and upto now they are holding up well and very comfortable. One of the crew bought some lovely wine glasses, again at a very competitive price. We think when we come over to experience islands and tranquil places, its very important to buy from the local shops. Without these we would not be able to enjoy the uniqueness of our visits and these businesses sometimes rely on us for their existance. Ifeveryone visiting buys at least one item from different shops, this island will remain as special as it is to for many more years.

Well our summer cruising is now well and done for this year. we have just been looking back on our adventures from this year and our sailing adventures around the Channel Islands were definitely our most challenging, but also our most rewarding.
These beautiful islands all have their own character and we loved all these characters.
We have to be honest and say that we nearly didnt come to Alderney. We planned on Jersey, and Guernsey, with an overnighter at anchor on Sark. Well we are so happy that we decided to add Alderney to our travels. We felt so comfortable here that we did stay longer, and our only regret is that we hired our bikes for one day only!!. Big mistake. If you do make the trip to Alderney (And we strongly recommend that you do) and dont have bikes onboard, book them for the duration of your stay. We will on our return next June. We do have a couple of fold up bikes on the boat, but for a little extra cost it really is worth while to hire something more substantial ie Electric Bikes!! on a nice day, theses really are the best way to get around and also get plenty of excercise. Yes you still hav eto peddle, but its so much easier.
So thanks a lot for the bikes, and next year we will be having them for a longer duration and get to know this island better.

This shop is attached to the bike hire. While Lee hired the bike, I had a quick look at the clothes. I was pleasantly surprised by the variety of styles and choices. I didnt spend a fortune, but got some odds and ends and was really happy with my purchases. I totally agree with the comment from Sarah and Bill, people should always look for something in these small private or family run businesses on small island like Alderney. These are what give the place its charm and sets it apart from the run of the mill places we visit and you will get excellent value for money with that personal touch.

Cycle & Surf Bike Hire by Kerry & Lee(Sunfinder)
Well you have to hire a bike when coming to Alderney as it really is the best way to see the island. We actually had bikes on the boat, but we wanted to try out the electric bikes. All we can say is if you have never been on one of these modern electric bikes, please try one. They are such a pleasant experience. Lee and I are not getting any younger and would have struggled to see as much of the island as we did on peddle power alone. Very helpful man who served us and was genuinely interested that we had a good time. Well we did! See you next year.

Braye Beach Hotel by Kerry & Lee(Sunfinder)
We stayed on the boat, so cant comment on the rooms, but we did eat here a couple of times and were really taken in by the setting and the really relaxing atmosphere that you feel here. Although probably at the higher end of the prices league, but worth every penny.

We heard that this was probably the best restaurant on the island, and some of the comments on here back that up. Well we would have to agree. There are quite a few really good restaurants here for such a small island, bur Le Pesked Restaurant is one of the best.

Loved our adventures on Alderney on the bicycles. a car is definitely not necessary to discover this amazing and romantic island. Take a picnic with you, choose the right day and enjoy. we really did and have vowed to do it again later this year. Also the service was fantastic and very friendly. a family run business that gives you a really personal touch. They also have a clothes shop attached to it and there is a great range of ladies clothing.
See you very soon xx

Cycle & Surf Clothing by Sarah & Bill Forsythe
Second visit to the island and hadnt visited this shop last time, we thought it was a surf shop. The lesson here is don't judge a shop by its name....Its a gem of a family run shop that are sadly becoming a rarity on main land England. Please come and visit these shops on this island, they need us visitors to keep trading. we dont Surf or ride bicycles, but if you do, the other part of their business hires the equipment, and its only next door.

Reynards Shoe Shop by Tony & Anna
Same owners as the Reynards Jewellers and very close to it. This is a must visit if clothes or gift shopping, and another example of a traditional high street shop that are becoming an endangered species. we always try and shop and purchase in these type of establishments. Keep the high street shops from succumbing to everyone buying online, or our high streets will be lost forever.

Shirley's & His Essentials by Tony & Anna
Good choice of clothing for both of us, as previously commented on here, the name says it all "His and Hers" although only a small shop, there is plenty of stock for both sexes. Its great to see these small high street shops are still trading and we feel it important to use these shops because if not our high streets will change forever.

Reynards Jewellers by Tony & Anna
We nipped here, its right next to Jacks Cafe at the bottom of Victoria Street. Lovely jewellers with much more to offer other than jewellery. Ie shoes, clothes, gifts etc. Its a little bit like an upmarket Aladdins cave. If you are looking for gifts for yourself or others this is well worth a visit.

Cycle & Surf Bike Hire by Tony & Anna
Although we didnt hire any bikes from here as we have our own on board, our guests did so they could discover the island with us. I am glad they did, and next time we will hire electric bikes when visiting Alderney. We cycle everywhere on our sailin trips, but our standard peddle bikes could not compete with the electric ones provided by Cycle and Surf. We were taken aback by the speed and distance these bikes can travel, and although a certain amount of effort is needed, the ease they go up the hill ftom Braye Harbour is soul impressive.
Electric is the future for sure.

The Divers Inn by Tony & Anna
This is next door to the Braye Beach Hotel, and may even be owned by them. It is definitely frequented by the local community, although tourists also visit. we would best describe it as a typical English pub, where the locals are more than happy to help you with any information you need. I dont think they serve food, but I could be mistaken, however if you are hungry and they dont serve food, the hotel is only next door.
Well worth a visit to pop in and meet the Alderney characters

Jack's Alderney by Tony & Anna
When we saw this on the site, we were delighted to see that it was the previous manager from the Braye Beach Hotel. He is doing a tremendous job in his new eaterie and his personality is rubbing off, making it a nice experience to eat in. It does close early, or did on our visit, so go for breakfast or lunch.

Le Pesked Restaurant at Harbour Lights Tavern by Tony & Anna
There are quite a few excellent restaurants on this petit beautiful island, and it is almost impossible to choose one restaurant as the number one. However if someone was to offer us one meal in any restaurant on Alderney we would probably choose this one. The Chef David is a typical French proud Chef that serves up fantastic food. Its so easy to say food is fantastic etc. but the food here really is special and very reasonably priced.
See you next time!!

We didnt stay at the hotel but we enjoyed coming here for drinks and food on the balcany on a sunny day. It seems new management this year, but the standard has not dropped. We noticed some of the other comments on here before shopping here. Yes there are other shops that you can get newspapers from and yes there are other shops that you can get gifts and tourist gifts from. The difference we found here is that the staff or the owners (We didnt know who they were) are far more friendly and helpful than some of the other shops nearby. we were always made very welcome and actually looked forward to getting our newspapers and gifts from here. See you soon.

Alderney Accommodation by Dawn & Dereck Hook
Our guests stayed on the boat with us on our recent visit. Next time I think we will book some accommodation for them. Although its great to have guests, sometimes you need a bit of your own space. We had a look in the office here and they have lots of different kinds of accommodation available. So next time I think this will be the best option. If you are taking guests on board and not to sure, this is a great option.

We are not really campers, but after seeing this camp site on here we decided to go and have a look. Well all I can say is if all camp sites were like this we would be into camping. Everything from the view, the cleanliness, the location were exceptional. So much so that we are seriously considering bringing friends over and putting them up here. OK its not Braye Beech hotel standard, but I bet it could be a lot more fun!

If you want provisions for the boat, this is the place for you. Everything seems fresh and home made. We did a shop here before we set sail the next day. Our only regret is that we didnt buy more. Lots of goodies for a crossing or a picnic at anchor. We will be back later this year.

Landed in the marina and decided to walk into town. Nice walk but a bit hilly. looked on your site for bike hire and saw this place. Very friendly owners couldnt be more helpful and also offer electric bikes for those of us who dont want to make too much effort coming back and forward from the marina to town. If your visiting Alderney and dont want the hassle of hiring a car and finding parking places in town, go for the bike option. lots of fun and you will probably come back from your holiday lighter than when you arrived.

I really cant decide which restaurant is the best on your harbour guide,as everyone has different tastes, some like Indian food, some like Italian, some like fish & chips. All I can say is its very hard to find a better restaurant in the whole of the Channel Islands let alone Alderney. If your looking for quality in food and service, this is for you.

Whenever we come to Alderney we tend to eat in 'town' but this time we decided to push the boat out and try The Brae Beach restaurant.
One of the best decisions we have ever made, it was delicious and believe it or not wasn't over the top price wise.
So if you have always wondered but never tried, give it a go.

Visitor Attractions
Visit Alderney
Alderney, the third largest of the Channel Islands invites you to travel to and discover one of the few unspoiled, peaceful, natural and totally relaxing British Isles.

View a 360° tour Imagine a little island - just one and a half miles wide and three and a half miles long with just over two thousand friendly and welcoming inhabitants. Like Guernsey and Jersey, the island enjoys a mild climate and independence, with its own government and a fledgling off-shore finance and E-commerce sector.

Despite its closeness to mainland France (8 miles), Guernsey (23 miles), Jersey (30 miles) and the Isle of Wight (60 miles), Alderney has managed to avoid mainstream tourism. Remote, yet well-connected with direct scheduled air links from the UK, Alderney has its own airport and harbour.

Visit Alderney and you will discover an oasis with an ancient and varied history, an abundance of flora and fauna, beautiful beaches, an enviable lifestyle with that unique, contagious phenomenon known as 'the Alderney Feeling'.

Visitor Attractions
The Alderney Wildlife Trust aims to promote the conservation and protection of Alderney's terrestrial and marine wildlife and associated habitats, also to promote the conservation and protection of places of scientific interest, amenity value or natural beauty. Since its launch in 2002 the Trust now actively manages around 20k of public footpath and over 120ha of the island’s countryside as nature reserve, in addition to the Island’s Internationally Imprtant Wetland (Ramsar) site which includes many of Alderney’s key species such as Northern Gannet and Puffin. The Trust also founded the Island’s Bird Observatory in 2016 which collects detailed records of the momentous European migration which passes the island each year.
When visiting the Island you can find out more about the Trust’s regular walks and activities programme from bat and hedgehog walks, to wildlife kayaking, boat trips and historic tours at the Wildlife Centre in the centre of the island’s only town, St. Anne
(www.alderneywildlife.org/whats’on). The volunteers and staff at the centre can also help you plan your visit, pointing out interesting and often missed sites and providing access to unusual buildings such as the ominous WWII naval tower known as the Odeon

St Annes Guest House
Welcome to Ingrid's guest house and home. The small guest house with lots of character. You are not a guest, you are a visitor in Ingrid's home. ' I inherited some beautiful classic antique furniture and had to keep it in storage for 8 years until I found the guest house - the two were made for each other. The building is from the late 1700's and I am forunate in that it still retains some original features. The dining room / lounge gives this house an illusion of grandeur with its high ceiling, large sash windows and open fireplace. Some of the furniture - the grandfather clock (restored on the island), welsh dresser and pictures add to the feeling of elegance. The staircase with the original mahogany hand rail leads up to the bedrooms. There are only three rooms, two ensuite and one with its own bathroom. Each room has its own individual decor and I have tried to add a feeling of comfort through the soft furnishings and paintings. All the rooms have an east / west aspect so are full of light. The rooms are equiped with TVs and the trays have a selection of tea, coffee, hot chocolate and home made biscuits.

To the rear of the property is a quiet patio, the beech table in the centre was hand made in the 30s. Surrounded by flower pots, climbing roses and jasmine, you can listen to the fountain and watch the goldfish. Beyond is a small garden, a retreat, a place to relax with a book or bring in a bottle of wine, glasses are of course provided. Breakfast is a feast of fresh fruit salad, melon or pink grapefruit. Local dairy produce and home made jams and marmelades accompany the cooked breakfast with bread from the bakery '
