The latest hand held handy gadget to really catch the imagination has to be the Moerer WIB2D, which retails at £399. Not only is it a Navtex is also doubles up as a barograph, that gives read-outs of air-pressures for the past 48 hours on the handheld consul screen or can by hooked up to a PC for a seven-day retrospective.

It comes with rechargeable USB 12V or mains batteries, built in antenna and PC interface facility with software that allows it to run on Windows 2000, XP or Vista. It receives simultaneous monitoring on both 290kHz for inshore and 518kHz for international information, which can be filtered to suit whichever area you are interested in.

And the most incredible thing of all the Moerer WIB2D gives you all this in a consul the size of a cigarette packet… Nifty!
