Information
There is a tremendous variety of sailing from the Isle of Man - suitable for both experienced sailors and the novice, from the comparative calm of Douglas and Ramsey bays, to the rugged coastlines of the north and south of the Island. Whether its leisurely cruising or exhilarating racing, the Island is an ideal location. In addition, dinghy racing is becoming extremely popular, with regular races held on Sundays during the winter at Baldwin reservoir. The Round the Island Yacht Race is a major event in the Island's sailing calendar, but throughout the year there is a wide variety of races and trials to test sailing skills.
Besides the four main harbours mentioned below, there are good anchorages at Castletown and Derbyhaven in the south east, Laxey Bay in the east, and Port Erin in the south west. Most of the harbours are on the east coast, although, a visit to the west coast with its contrasting scenery is worthwhile.
Douglas
Shelter: good expect in the NE to S'ly winds. Heavy seas run in during NE gales. Beware of commercial traffic.
Ramsey
Shelter: good expect in NE winds. Harbour dries. Beware commercial traffic movements.
Peel

Port St Mary
Shelter: good except in strong E/SE winds. Inner harbour dries.

Island Laws
Similar seatbelt laws to those in the United Kingdom and elsewhere apply and visiting drivers should negotiate our narrow roads and lanes with care. It is an offence on the Island to use a mobile phone whilst driving. In some of the larger towns and villages Parking Discs are required (obtainable from Isle of Man Steam Packet vessels, the Sea Terminal, airport, car hire companies and local Commissioners Offices).
The Island has a strong anti-drugs policy and illegal possession of banned substances can lead to a jail sentence if found guilty.
Trailer caravans are not permitted on the Isle of Man, without a permit. However, self-propelled motor caravans are welcome, as are tenting campers.
Licensing Laws
Liberal new Isle of Man legislation has introduced 24-hour opening for pubs, bars and off-licences. This means that all licensed premises, including nightclubs, restaurants and the Douglas casino now have the option to serve alcohol 24 hours a day.

THE ISLE OF MAN STEAM PACKET COMPANY HISTORY
The Isle of Man Steam Packet Company is the oldest continually operating passenger shipping company in the world, having began operations in 1830.
THE ISLE OF MAN BEFORE THE STEAM PACKET COMPANY
Prior to 1830, there were other shipping companies serving the Isle of Man, before the Steam Packet Company was formed. The smuggling trade (causing considerable loss to the British Revenue) led to the Crown purchasing the Isle of Man from the Atholl family in 1765 and the Redcoats moved in. Two years after this, Westminster organized a weekly packet boat service between Douglas and Whitehaven, thereby providing a lifeline to the Garrison on the Isle of Man.

RYA Courses, Sailing Training Courses, Yacht Club
The Douglas Bay Yacht Club was formed in the 1860's by retired naval officers and local merchants living in Douglas, the capital of the Isle of Man. By the 1890's there was a flourishing racing programme, featuring large cutters with professional crews, racing in Douglas Bay and offshore. This continued until the First World War in 1914 when the Club ceased operations.
Club sailing in Douglas did not start again until 1957 when Douglas Motor Boat & Sailing Club was set up with premises in St Georges Street. The Club moved in 1977, taking over and refurbishing the Trafalgar Tavern on the South Quay. It held regular Cruiser Racing on the sea in the summer and Dinghy Racing on the West Baldwin reservoir in winter. In 1991 the Club acquired the rights to the original name and changed to the Douglas Bay Yacht Club.

The Home of Rest for Old Horses came into being in 1950 when Mrs Mildred Royston and her sister Miss Kermode, became dismayed at the number of perfectly fit, old, working horses being shipped from the Island for a doubtful future.
From small beginnings, hard work, dedication and a lean income, the Home progressed until 1955 when a fortunate legacy provided the means to purchase "Bulrhenny" where the Home is now.
Of particular concern, were the old tram horses, and today we have "first option" on tram horses as they retire.
Since 1950 more than 280 animals have found happy retirement. We presently look after over 50 horses and 8 donkeys.
We rely entirely on voluntary contributions and this can be by either a donation of any size or, by adopting one of our residents for which a minimum donation of £10.00 annually will be gratefully accepted but with the cost of feed and care for these horses and donkeys, anyone contributing more than this, will help considerably to meet those needs. A Newsletter will be sent out in the Spring and Autumn along with a photograph of your chosen adoption.

Boat Moorings, Marinas
This is a well sheltered, tidal (+/- 2 ½ hours HW) port but access can be difficult in strong easterly winds as the entrance is via a narrow channel between 2 breakwaters. The harbour is busy with commercial vessels dealing with regular lo-lo services from the United Kingdom and Ireland and is the only Manx port with facilities to handle imports of bulk cement. The harbour, directly alongside the town centre, also has its own small shipyard, used mainly by local and visiting fishing vessels.
The disused Queen's Pier in Ramsey Bay was built in 1886 to provide a low water landing for passenger ferries and was last used in 1970. Debates continue on the various proposals currently being considered for its future.
Marinas
VHF Ch 12.
The main port of the Isle of Man with the most extensive facilities for both commercial and private vessels. Douglas is the only Manx port with dedicated passenger handling facilities and roll-on roll-off vehicle services. The port provides specialist berths for oil and gas tankers as well as general cargo vessels, fishing vessels and occasional survey, customs and naval vessels. The Isle of Man's first marina was opened during 2001 and offers a limited number of berths for visiting leisure craft, subject to availability. A second phase of pontoons was completed in the autumn of 2006. Substantial ongoing investment is continuing to further enhance the harbour's facilities. A private towage service is available and a commercial inshore passenger ferry operates various services throughout the summer season to other ports.

Our chefs excel by cooking with the best local and imported ingredients available, achieving a fine balance of both traditional and contemporary cuisine, complimented by our carefully selected wine list.
Dine in style in our Conservatory Restaurant in which we have now banned smoking or enjoy a quiet drink in a relaxing atmosphere in the bar which is open throughout the
day and until Midnight.
Our dishes are all freshly prepared on the premises, using ingredients sourced from the Isle of Man wherever possible. As the Island is surrounded by the Irish Sea, we also try to utilise a variety of freshly caught seafood supplied by Devereau & Sons.

South India is famous for its exotic cuisine prepared with artful and exquisite combinations of fresh spices. Here at Tandoor Indian restaurant in Douglas, the chef creates and provides our guest with the authentic cuisine from Northern and southern parts of India, famous for its clay oven dishes and exotic curries. We trust your visit at Tandoor will be reminiscent of the traditional cuisine of India served by our staff.
What is Tandoor?
The igloo-shaped clay oven known as the tandoor is most closely identified with Indian cooking. This is an excellent method of baking meats, poultry, fish and bread.
The meat, poultry or fish is first marinated in a roseate spice mixture, and then impaled on long skewers that are lowered into the tandoor. Sheets of bread dough, called Naan, are also slapped against the sides of the oven and peeled off when crisply charred and blistered.

Provisions, Something Special
The Fish House is the brainchild of Patrick Croft who is probably the Isle of Man’s most famous fishmonger! Patrick has always had an interest in the sea, having lived in Port Erin and Port St Mary in the south of the island most of his life. He has worked for over 20 years as a fishmonger and has won numerous awards for his fish filleting skills.
Patrick has always had a passion for provenance, high quality local seafood and is a pretty mean cook as well! With all this combined he thought why not open somewhere in his home village and so the Fish House was born.
The Fish House is relaxed sort of place where you can buy fresh local seafood including the famous Isle of Man Queenies. If you want to take more time out you sit in the diner area and enjoy something freshly prepared from Patricks very own menu which is served all day. If you want to grab something on the move you can as he also offers a convenient take away service selling freshly made sandwiches and baps to go.
The Fish House is in the heart of Port St Mary located on the corner of Station Road and The Promenade. Car Parking is free and can be found at the rear of the property just opposite the village Town Hall. There is a bus stop almost opposite on the main road into Port St Mary and we are only five minutes walk from the steam train stop at Port St Mary train station.

Restaurants

As it says on the tin, we are “Just Pizza & Pasta” (with a few specials too)!
Our customers tell us we create the best pizza, pasta and risotto on the Isle of Man.
Our food is simple, fresh & rustic – Authentic Italian food combined with fresh local produce that give amazing results.
Dine in our laid back family friendly warehouse styled restaurant with our kitchen open for all to see. Sit on our reclaimed (from church pews) wooden bench seating and tables (you will find some on the walls too!) and watch our chefs work with passion.
Our professional gas & wood burning ovens have been hand made by Forni Ceky, the leading Italian manufacturer of hand crafted ovens for pizza baking. For more than three generations the company has been creating its products entirely by hand - brick by brick.
Our pizza is a hybrid yeast and sourdough proofed for over 48 hours. This long proofing time with cooking at intense heat of up to 500°c produces a moist, light, digestible crust which is aromatic and delicious!
