British soccer legend Sir Bobby Robson has died aged 76. The former England, Newcastle and Ipswich Town manager had been battling cancer for the past 15 years during which he set up the Bobby Robson Foundation which worked towards early detection and treatment of the disease. His final public appearance was on Sunday at St.James? Park at a charity match to raise funds for the cause.
During his on pitch career, Robson was capped 20 times by England and was a star player with Fulham and West Brom. As manager of England he took the team to the semi-finals of the World Cup in 1990, where they were beaten by West Germany in a penalty shoot out.
A statement issued by his family reads: 'It is with great sadness that it has been announced today that Sir Bobby Robson has lost his long and courageous battle with cancer? He died very peacefully this morning at his home in County Durham with his wife and family beside him? Sir Bobby's funeral will be private and for family members only? A thanksgiving service in celebration of Sir Bobby's life will be held at a later date for his many friends and colleagues? Lady Robson and the family would very much appreciate it if their privacy could be respected at this difficult time.'
