RICHIE BENAUD DIES

Friday April 10th, 2015
ImageRichie Benaud the legendary commentator and former Australian cricket captain, has sadly died at the age of 84.

Richie who was a great spin bowler was no slouch with the bat either, scoring 11,719 career first class runs, including 23 centuries, with an impressive average of 36.50 runs per innings, and has the accolade of being the first cricketer to score 2000 runs and take 200 wickets in test cricket.

Back in November Richie confirmed that he was being treated for skin cancer, and only couple years ago he crashed his vintage Sunbeam car and broke a couple of vertebrae.

But for all his cricketing prowess as bowler, batsman, and master tactician, Richie will most likely be remembered for his outstanding commentary work. You could feel like you were actually at the match when he was commentating, softly spoken, and with an absolute wealth of knowledge of the game.

He was also known for his one liners, including:

'And Glenn McGrath dismissed for two, just ninety-eight runs short of his century'

And his opening line when starting commentary on a test match was always, 'Morning everyone'.
and then the banter would begin.

Richie we are going to miss you.
