LONGEST BRIDGE IN THE WORLD

The longest bridge in the world has been opened in China. It is 26.4 miles long and 110ft wide. The six lane bridge connects the Port of Qingdao with the airport on the Huangdao. The bridge apparently shortens the drive by 20 miles.

The structure, which is long enough to span the English Channel, took four years to build, cost around £1.42 billion and used enough steel to build 65 Eiffel Towers. It is designed to withstand a Richter scale 8 earthquake, typhoons and the impact of a 30,000 ton vessel - l but only one at a time.

It pipped the post for being the longest by overtaking the Lake Ponchartrain Causeway in Louisiana by two and a half miles. But the glory will be short-lived. In 2016 China will open another bridge between Hong Kong and Macao and Guangdong province that will stretch 30 miles.
