FRENCH RESISTANCE HEROIN Andree Peel Wednesday February 04th, 2009
ImageHAPPY 104th BIRTHDAY TO FRENCH RESISTANCE HEROIN.
WWII hero Andree Peel celebrates her 104th birthday today. The former French resistance fighter saved over 100 lives and survived a Nazi Death Squad. Working under the alias Agent Rose, Peel help many British and American pilots escape occupied Europe during the conflict and received a personal letter of congratulations for her efforts from Winston Churchill. The USA also presented her with Medal of Freedom and she received the Croix de Guerre and two Legions d’Honneur.
Her involvement with the French resistance began when she helped distribute secret newspapers and she was eventually promoted to head of a Resistance under-section that improvised landing strips using torches to smuggle fugitive allied airmen onto seagoing vessels. She was being lined up in front of a firing squad at Buchenwald when the US army arrived to liberate the prisoners.
She now lives in the village of Long Ashton in the UK with her husband John whom she met whist working in Paris. 'I saved 102 pilots before being arrested, interrogated and tortured. I suffer still from that. I still have the pain,' said former Agent Rose. “I was born with courage…I did not allow cruel people to find in me a person they could torture.'
