DRUG SQUAD OFFICER BECOMES DRUG SMUGGLING MASTERMIND

In 2007 a former drug squad officer teamed up with a convicted cop killer in a plot to smuggle £235 million worth of cocaine from the Caribbean to Ireland. They planned to do so aboard a £100,000 35ft catamaran bought especially for the job. However as the ex copper, 49year old Michael Daly, and his accomplice, 50year old Perry Wharrie, set off on the 27 day voyage from Barbados to Cork customs men in Colombia were already eavesdropping from on sat-phone calls.

When the smugglers reached the waters off cork things began to go horribly wrong when one of the inflatables they were using to tranship the drugs ashore capsized dropping 62 bales of cocaine into the sea. Daly and Wharrie managed to get shore but were immediately arrested by Irish police.

Daly who is currently serving eight years for another smuggling job has admitted masterminding the plot. He, Wharrie (who went to prison last year) and four other men involved are now awaiting sentence.

Ironically the catamaran was called ‘Luck Day.’
