COSTA COFFEE TASTER Wednesday March 11th, 2009
ImageWAKE UP AND SMELL THE COST-A COFFEE
He’s officially the man with the most expensive tongue in the world and his name is Gennaro Pelliccia, who for the pat 18 years has been a professional coffee taster. It was recently revealed that his employers, Costa Coffee have insured Mr Pelliccia’s tongue for an incredible £10million with Lloyds of London.
Spokesman for Lloyd’s broker Glencain Ltd said of the deal, 'The taste buds of a Master of Coffee are as important as the vocal cords of a singer or the legs of a top model, and this is one of the biggest single insurance policies taken out for one person.'
When asked what he though Mr Pelliccia, who samples each batch of raw coffee beans delivered to the coffee chain giants’ London plant, said, 'My 18 years of experience enable me to distinguish between thousands of flavours… In my profession my taste buds and sensory skills are crucial... and allow me to distinguish any defects,'
Not content with sales in excess of 108 million cups of coffee per year Costa Coffee has plans to double its number of outlets. That means an awful lot more beans for Mr Pelliccia ‘s expensive tongue to deal with.
